Gaza man killed by soldiers as thousands protest Israel policy

Security forces in riot gear deployed in high numbers along the frontiers of Israel and the Palestinian territories in anticipation of a repeat of last year's violence, in which at least 38 people died near the borders with Lebanon and Syria.

Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian protester in?Gaza?on Friday as thousands in the Palestinian territories, Israel and neighboring countries participated in an annual protest against the Jewish state's land policies.

Security forces in riot gear deployed in high numbers along the frontiers of Israel and the Palestinian territories in anticipation of a repeat of last year's violence, in which at least 38 people died near the borders with Lebanon and Syria.

But for the most part, protests were small and organizers kept demonstrators from actually marching on the borders.

The "Land Day" rallies are an annual event marked by Israeli Arabs and Palestinians in the West Bank andGaza?who protest what they say are discriminatory Israeli land policies.

Gaza?health official Adham Abu Salmia said Israeli forces shot and killed Mahmoud Zaqout, 21, and critically wounded another man as they were approaching the Israel-Gaza border during a demonstration of a few thousand people organized by the territory's Hamas rulers.

The Israeli military said troops fired warning shots before shooting directly at Zaqout, in accordance with the army's rules of engagement.

The military said it responded to protesters with tear gas in addition to gunfire. Abu Salmia said an additional 37 protesters throughout?Gaza?were lightly injured, while the Israeli military put the number at about 29.

By midday, skirmishes had broken out between protesters and security forces in the Jerusalem area. Palestinians threw rocks and Israeli troops responded with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber pellets.

Dozens of Palestinians were treated for light wounds in hospitals throughout the West Bank and Jerusalem, including four with serious head wounds from rubber pellets and one hit in the head by a tear gas canister, said Mohammed Ayyad, a spokesman for the Red Crescent medical service in Ramallah.

In southern Lebanon Friday, thousands of Lebanese and Palestinians gathered outside the Crusader-built Beaufort castle 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Israel. Lebanese security forces kept them from moving any closer to the border.

Last year, demonstrators from Lebanon and Syria tried twice to break across the borders into Israel, setting off clashes with Israeli troops in which at least 38 people were killed.

Sobhiyeh Mizari, 70, said she always taught her 12 children "never to forget Palestine."

"We will liberate our land against the will of Israel and its backers," said Mizari, who said her husband was killed in Israeli shelling of Lebanon in 1978.

Among the protesters in Lebanon were rabbis from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect Neturei Karta, a radical anti-Israel group that believes Jews must live without a country of their own until the coming of the Messiah.

In Jordan, thousands of demonstrators gathered a few kilometers (miles) east of Jordan's border with the West Bank, chanting, "Death to Israel." Israel controls the West Bank side of the border.

"Get out Jews, get out. Jerusalem and the West Bank are in the land of virtue, in Arab-Muslim land, and your dirt will stain it," Hammam Saeed, a hawkish Muslim Brotherhood leader in Jordan, told the cheering crowd. Jordanian media reported that representatives from Neturei Karta, which traditionally supports Israel's enemies, were present there as well.

About 2,000 Arab-Israelis demonstrated in northern Israel, where a large portion of Israel's Arab minority lives.

Several dozen Palestinians who live in east Jerusalem waved their national flag outside Jerusalem's walled Old City. "One, one homeland!" they chanted.

Palestinians were banned from entering from the West Bank except for medical emergencies, and police barred Palestinian men under 40 from praying at a volatile Jerusalem holy site, citing security concerns.

The demonstrators performed their communal Muslim Friday prayers where they stood, praying on their flags instead of traditional mats.

They were surrounded by what appeared to be an equal number of Israeli security forces.

"Israel has no trouble with peaceful protest and respects the rights of people to demonstrate peacefully," said government spokesman Mark Regev.

Many Palestinians, energized by Arab Spring uprisings that have overturned decades-old authoritarian regimes, see massive, coordinated marches as one of the most effective strategies to draw attention to their cause.

"After the Arab revolutions, there's awareness of the importance of popular participation," said Arab activist Jafar Farah. "This has rattled the Arab regimes, and now it's frightening the Israeli government."

Easy Suggestions When Trying To Get Online Personal Loans

by Elnora Mauer on March 30, 2012

If a person wants money they might consider applying for online personal loans. The way people look for financial products has gone through a revolution with the Internet. Prior to the ability of going on the Internet a consumer would have to do business with a local finance company which might not have the best terms.

With the Internet a person will find things are more convenient however these lenders will still need to ensure the applicant is qualified. All finance companies want to see the credit rating of the applicant to determine how much of a risk they pose. Since all lenders are risk adverse they want to make sure the applicant is able to pay their debts and this is why they look for a credit report.

If a consumer has any errors inside their credit file it will make it more challenging to get a low rate of interest. This is why professionals recommend that consumers get a copy of their report and inspect it for mistakes. By getting these errors corrected an individual will have the strongest chance to get a better deal.

The lenders will also want to know how much the applicant is earning and the sources of this income. Individuals that are employed will usually need their latest copy of their salary slip and bank account statement. Individuals that are considered self employed will need more documentation and it varies depending on the lender.

With the current challenges being experienced in the economy the underwriting costs associated with loans has risen greatly. These lenders have become very sensitive to risks and this is why most experts suggest shopping around for a better deal. While investigating the various finance companies look at the customer service track record of these firms.

Since each of these businesses have their own way of doing business looking at what others customers have to say about the company will really give some insight of how they do things. By reviewing the testimonials a person can learn how the company conducts business. This is very helpful since those with the largest number of positive reviews will usually have the best rates.

By securing online personal loans a person will be able to breath easy knowing that money is available when they need it. The benefit of using the Internet is the convenience of reviewing many lenders at one time. This ease of use may revolutionize the way lending takes place in the future.

Nano star fruit could help diagnose cancer

Andrew Purcell, online producer

Each nano star fruit is approximately 550 nanometres long (Image: Leo Vigderman and Eugene Zubarev, Rice University)

Star-fruit-shaped nanorods, grown in the lab from gold nanowires with pentagonal cross-sections, could dramatically improve chemical sensing techniques.

The research may help to improve sensing of organic molecules, including biomarkers for diseases such as cancer. "There are many cancers where the diagnostics depend on the lowest concentration of the biomarker that can be detected," says Eugene Zubarev of Rice University in Houston, Texas, who led the research.

The nanorods returned signals 25 times stronger than conventional smooth-surfaced nanorods when using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, a popular technique for detecting organic molecules. Raman spectroscopy determines the molecular structure of compounds by measuring the way they scatter monochromatic light, usually from a laser source.

The nano star fruit boost the signal by taking advantage of gold's ability to boost electromagnetic fields locally. "Fields will concentrate at specific defects, like the sharp edges of our nano star fruits, and that could help detect the presence of organic molecules at very low concentration," says Zubarev. "If we can modify the surface roughness such that biological molecules of interest will adsorb selectively on the surface of our rugged nanorods, then we can start looking at very low concentrations of DNA or cancer biomarkers."

How to construct your own tv lift for cabinetry using electric actuator

These days, every body loves to watch their favorite television shows, movies, soap and serials in a flat screen LCD or LED hanging with the wall out there somewhere in their drawing or living room area. These flat or plasma screens TV's requires to be keep in a safe place, so why not try different things to protect them. It's always safe to hide your LCD or LED screen behind a TV lift cabinetry whenever you switch off and again when you wish to switch on just pop-in the lift cabinetry and your LCD/LED set is projected outside the cabinetry to be viewed. Thus, a device should be installed something like an electric actuator or a linear actuator show the process of sliding in or out of your lift cabinetry is not done manually. It's also safer because if your LED/LCD TV set are being hidden behind the lift cabinetry, it would remain safer from the eyes of thieves. Thus, you would get an extra bit of space to breadth free inside your living/dinning space as you can utilize the free space where the TV was projected earlier, to the fullest as per your requirements. Thus, the requirement and need for a TV lift cabinetry is essential. You can make the cabinetry all by yourself or through any other local carpenter operating inside your locality.

There are few steps through which you can construct your own TV lift cabinetry. These are as follows:

* Firstly, take an inch tape in your hand and carefully measure the length and breadth of your LCD/LED TV set. After that take a saw and begin making a wooden box in such a manner that the inner measurement of the wooden box would remain an inch longer as well as higher than the actual size of your LCD/LED TV. After creating the wooden box, try to add support to the cabinet hanging with L-Cabinets which provide stability to the wall;

* Secondly, attach an electric actuator or a linear actuator to the bottom half of a cabinet. Linear actuators will help the whole system to remain in a straight motion runned through an electric motor which helps the electric actuator to slide in and out your TV Set whenever push in or out the cabinet;

* Thirdly, axe down a piece of plywood as same as the outer dimension of 2 vertical sides with dimension of 2x4's of the plank box and then screw the wooden box with the TV lift cabinetry;

* Fourthly, buy a pair of guide rails and then properly screw them to the either end side of your 2X4 dimensional box along with the plywood covering side. These guided rails should be attached with an equidistant to each other so that the TV set rails down quiet easily through the rails;

* Fifthly, Now screw the L-brackets on the backside of your LCD/LED TV set properly so that the whole structure stays balanced;

* Sixthly, also screw the electric actuator or a linear actuator to the center point of the plywood board properly and also attach a rod to its center;

* Seventhly, make the necessary connections using the wires each connecting with the actuator and the remote control;

* Lastly, put your LCD on this gliding rails and screw the plywood box to the accessories, you choose to attach with and simply plug-in your TV actuator with the wall socket.

Now, gently press the LCD/LED TV remote and watch your television rise. This is how you can construct your own TV lift cabinetry.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Syrians braved tear gas and gunfire to protest across the country Friday, vowing to storm the capital Damascus to oust President Bashar Assad as the European Union ramped up pressure on the regime by imposing sanctions on his wife and other close relatives.

Security forces deployed in many cities to disperse protests, but opposition groups reported fewer protester deaths than in past weeks. Activists said more than 20 people were killed nationwide in army attacks on opposition areas or clashes with armed rebels.

International condemnation and high-level diplomacy have failed to stop the year-old Syria crisis, which the U.N. says has killed more than 8,000 people, many of them civilian protesters.

Friday's sanctions bring to 13 the sets imposed by the EU to try to compel the regime to halt its violent crackdown on dissent. The U.S. and others have also imposed sanctions. Previous measures were aimed at Syrian companies and Assad himself.

Those imposed Friday targeted Asma Assad, Syria's British-born first lady, banning her from traveling to EU countries and freezing any assets she may have there. They also included the president's mother, sister, sister-in-law and eight government ministers.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said sanctions were weakening the regime.

"Their economic situation becomes ever more difficult. Syria has few reserves," he said. "We think its economic situation will become untenable."

While the measures have hurt Syria's economy, they appear to have had little effect on the regime's actions. It has regularly deployed troops, pro-government thugs and snipers to attack anti-regime protests. Human rights groups accuse the regime of shelling civilian areas and torturing and killing detainees in its push to stop the uprising, which it blames on terrorists carrying out a foreign conspiracy.

In Geneva, the U.N. Human Rights Council blasted Syria's crackdown and extended the mandate of a U.N. expert panel tasked with reporting on alleged abuses in the country.

A resolution passed by the 47-member body condemned "widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms perpetrated" by Syrian authorities, including summary executions, torture and sexual abuse of detainees and children.

Also Friday, UNICEF said at least 500 children have been killed in the conflict, while hundreds more have been injured, detained or abused. The U.N. children's agency said schools have closed and health centers have shut down or become too dangerous for many families to reach.

Throughout the conflict, China and Russia have protected Syria from censure by the U.N. Security Council, fearing a strongly worded resolution condemning Assad could pave the way for military intervention, as happened in Libya last year.

Russia, however, softened its stance Thursday by calling for Assad to pull his troops out of Syrian cities. The U.N. has been trying to secure a cease-fire so all parties could hold a dialogue on a political solution to end the conflict. So far, both sides have refused talks.

Regime forces continued to pound oppositions areas Friday, and activists reported major shelling and fire with heavy machine-guns in the provinces of Homs in central Syria, Idlib in the north and Daraa.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 23 civilians were killed in government attacks Friday. Government troops and armed rebels clashed in a number of places, with at 13 soldiers and three rebel fighter killed, the group said.

Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, said government troops killed 36 civilians on Friday. It did not provide details on each civilian killed.

Activists reported dozens of anti-regime protests in towns and cities across Syria under the banner "Damascus, we are coming." Security forces broke up many of them with gunfire and tear gas, and there were reports of wounded.

Activists reported fewer protester deaths and Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Observatory, said he had yet to confirm a single protester death on Friday, remarking that this was unusual.

"We hope it happens like this every time because we don't want anyone to die," he said.

The Syrian government has barred most media from working in the country, and activist accounts could not be independently verified.

Syria's state news agency said hundreds marched in a pro-Assad demonstration in the capital Damascus and published photos of them carrying Syrian flags and Assad photos.

In Jordan's capital Amman, blind Syrian cleric Ahmad al-Sayasneh called on a congregation of 1,000 Syrians to "remain steadfast until our tyrant leadership is ousted."

It was the cleric's first public appearance since fleeing Syria two months ago. Al-Sayasneh rose to prominence though his fiery sermons calling for civil disobedience at a mosque in the southern Syrian town of Daraa, considered the uprising's birthplace.

IND NG hosts Canadian forces at state military training facilities

By Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Matt Scotten
Indiana National Guard

EDINBURGH, Ind. - Hosting foreign forces and last summer?s multinational, NATO-led Bold Quest exercise, Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center has the reputation of a premier training facility and mobilization station for American troops, and has become world renowned as a training site for military, civilian and police force.

CanucksCanadian Cpl Anthony Van Wyngaarden, a machine gunner with 31st Canadian Brigade Group, Land Forces Central, Ontario, lays heavy suppressive fire for his fellow soldiers as they enter a building to search for simulated enemies during exercise Arrowhead Lightning 2012 at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center March 16, 2012. (Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Matt Scotten)

From March 8-25, over 250 Canadian soldiers from 31st Canadian Brigade Group, Land Forces Central Area in Ontario came by bus, helicopter and train to try their hand in urban warfare training at Camp Atterbury and the Muscatatuck Urban Training Complex for Exercise Arrowhead Lightning 2012.

?The March break period is a favorable timeframe for our soldiers to participate in extended training,? said Canadian Col. Mark Campbell, commander, 31st Canadian Brigade Group. ?These facilities and this location allow training that is not possible in Canada at this time of year.?

According to Campbell, the facilities at Atterbury and Muscatatuck allow soldiers to train in several different skill sets, from explosives to urban combat tactics. In Canada, soldiers would have to be sent to several different facilities to accomplish the same training that they are able to accomplish right here at Atterbury and Muscatatuck.

Canadian Brig. Gen. Fred Lewis, commander of Land Forces Central Area, said the facilities at Atterbury and Muscatatuck were so impressive that he hopes to send more and more troops here to train in the future.

?We?ve all used remote facilities or urban complex facilities at one time or another,? Lewis said, ?but this is to the next level. The complexity that is presented here is outstanding.?

The first wave of Canadian Soldiers arrived here March 8, with their vehicles arriving via the newly reopened railhead at Camp Atterbury. The remainder of the force arrived the following weekend.

Upon arrival, the soldiers immediately took to the task of training with Muscatatuck?s Wolf Operations Battalion in urban warfare, using facilities at Atterbury to include a live-fire shoot house and several small, urban complexes.

?The shoot house was the best,? said Canadian Cpl Anthony Van Wyngaarden, a machine gunner from the 31st CBG. ?Not only were we able to train with live rounds, but it was great being able to review everything we did on tape. It was some of the best and most realistic training I?ve had.?

After training at Camp Atterbury, the soldiers moved south to Muscatatuck. The training there began at 4 a.m., and the Canadian soldiers flew in on helicopters and had to navigate through wooded terrain under rain and darkness to an objective where simulated enemies had taken a foothold in two large adjacent buildings.

Soldiers had to gain fire superiority by setting up machine gun positions in a parking garage next to the two buildings and provide cover fire for their comrades as they infiltrated the building, practicing explosive-breaching techniques they had just learned at Atterbury the week before.

After they finished searching the building, they found that many of the enemies had escaped to the second building via an underground tunnel connecting the two. Soldiers were forced to close the tunnel and start all over again, infiltrating yet another large building and searching room-to-room for the enemies. The battle went on for several hours.

?These guys are doing a great job,? said Army Master Sgt. Scott Cutter, acting command sergeant major for Wolf Operations Observer-Controller Battalion. ?We have a lot of folks here at Wolf Ops that are real experts at this kind of warfare and these guys have picked up the skills we taught them very quickly.?

Although extremely impressed with the training at Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck, Canadian Cpl. Chris Bradley, an infantryman from the 31st, did have one complaint: ?I really wish we had more time here.?

Bradley might get his wish.

?I think it?s a really good idea for us to continue training down here,? Lewis said, adding that it was an especially good training tool for the younger generation of soldiers.

?The first thing you think to yourself when you get [to Muscatatuck], is that this place looks like something right out of a video game,? he said. ?That will have great resonance with the younger soldiers. I think I can see coming down here again. So far the U.S. Army has been a wonderful host and has supported us.?

Lewis said the site itself is not the only thing that makes Atterbury and Muscatatuck an ideal place for them to train. Canada?s reserve forces have two main timeframes in which they have their annual training. One of them is in March and the other is in February. He said that unless they want to do strictly cold-weather training, the weather in Indiana makes it an ideal place for Canadian soldiers to train.

Another experience that Canadian soldiers were able to benefit from was the opportunity to train alongside a coalition partner. Aside from receiving training from Wolf Ops, Canadian Chinook helicopters flew alongside Indiana National Guard Blackhawk helicopters to transport troops to Muscatatuck. Lewis looks to have more coalition training in the future.

?If something were ever to happen on the border between Canada and America, we will all be better able to operate together if we are used to training together,? Lewis said. ?I think that is the next step.?

?

What You Need To Do in Detail When Starting an Internet Marketing ...

The reasons people get into internet marketing are clear enough -the desire to be free of the daily grind and create your own financial future. But achieving these goals isn?t always as easy as people think. In today?s market, a lot of people are jumping online because they think that starting their own Internet Marketing business is the best way to achieve their goals. Yet there are other, less glamorous facts about online marketing. The truth is that starting your own Internet Marketing business can be quite difficult; it requires the same dedication and patience as any other business. What follows are some proven principles that will help make your internet marketing efforts as fruitful as possible.

Before you start your online business, make sure that you are comfortable with the internet. It is easy to tell that you have been exposed to the internet or you would have had no other way of reading this article. But this does not mean that you would know the first thing about what makes a online business successful. If your only tie to social media is with Myspace, then you need to get with the times.

Do you really have a stable game plan? It is one thing to have dreams of becoming an internet marketer. It is different from actually having a plan.

Registering a domain name for your company is something you should do early on. Take this step very seriously. If a certain name has special meaning to you, that doesn?t mean it?s good for your business. The length of the name counts too -very long or short ones are off-putting. The key to a good domain name is finding a balance. You may want to think about using important keywords related to your business. You may or may not want to register a name that?s identical to that of your business. It?s typical for new businesses to have to do some brainstorming before they come up with a name that they like that?s also available. Remember that this domain name is going to be the way your business is identified online, so it?s important that you choose wisely.

Do you have a plan? Its good if you want to make a lot of money.

There are lots of things that go into the setting up and building of an Internet Marketing business. The important thing is that you have enough information to get started. Your online education will continue as long as you?re involved in this business.

The Ultimate Survival Preparedness Kit for Your Car

Canadian Arctic rescue teams suggest drivers carry a can of dog food in their cars. Sound crazy? It seems that when people crash their cars into a snow bank on the tundra, they tend to eat their emergency food too soon. The dog food is less palatable and so stranded motorists will wait to eat that can of puppy chow until they really need it.

You don't have to be driving the vast expanses of northern Canada to get stuck in your car. Take these stories from the past year: Rita Chretien, 56, was found in a remote part of Nevada in May 2011 after being stranded for seven weeks, her car stuck in the mud. Chretien used a plastic bag to catch rainwater to drink. Last December, 23-year-old Lauren Weinberg was stranded on a snowy forest road southeast of Winslow, Ariz., for nine days and survived on two candy bars and a bottle of water. This January, Lynn S. Keelser, 61, survived for a week on peanut butter M&Ms when she took a wrong turn in a rental car and got stuck in an Idaho dairy wastewater pond. None of these drivers had cellphones. But even more important, none had an emergency-preparedness kit.

Being prepared is not merely a good rule for travel in highly remote areas. If you take the occasional extended road trip, you should pack a survival kit of crucial emergency supplies. We've compiled eight categories of essential supplies to carry in your car, made up from suggestions from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Army, the American Automobile Association (AAA), the Red Cross, and regional search-and-rescue teams. None, however, include Alpo.

Not just for the birds: Man-made noise has ripple effects on plants, too

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

A growing body of research shows that birds and other animals change their behavior in response to manmade noise, such as the din of traffic or the hum of machinery. But human clamor doesn't just affect animals. Because many animals also pollinate plants or eat or disperse their seeds, human noise can have ripple effects on plants too, finds a new study.

In cases where noise has ripple effects on long-lived plants like trees, the consequences could last for decades, even after the source of the noise goes away, says lead author Clinton Francis of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.

The study appears in the March 21 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

In previous studies, Francis and colleagues found that some animals increase in numbers near noisy sites, while others decline. But could animals' different responses to manmade noise have indirect effects on plants, too?

Because they can't move, many plants rely on birds and other animals to deliver pollen from one flower to the next, or to disperse their seeds.

To find out what animal responses to noise might mean for plants, the researchers conducted a series of experiments from 2007 to 2010 in the Bureau of Land Management's Rattlesnake Canyon Wildlife Area in northwestern New Mexico.

The region is home to thousands of natural gas wells, many of which are coupled with noisy compressors for extracting the gas and transporting it through pipelines. The compressors roar and rumble day and night, every day of the year.

The advantage of working in natural gas sites is they allow scientists to study noise and its effects on wildlife without many of the confounding factors often associated with noisy areas like roadways or cities, such as pollution from artificial light and chemicals or collisions with cars.

To find out what animal responses to manmade noise might mean for plants, first the researchers did an experiment using patches of artificial plants designed to mimic a common red wildflower in the area called scarlet gilia.

Each patch consisted of five artificial plants with three "flowers" each ? microcentrifuge tubes wrapped in red electrical tape ? which were filled with a fixed amount of sugar water for nectar. To help in estimating pollen transfer within and between the patches, the researchers also dusted the flowers of one plant per patch with artificial pollen, using a different color for each patch.

Din levels at noisy patches were similar to a highway heard from 500 meters away, Francis explained. When the researchers compared the number of pollinator visits at noisy and quiet sites, they found that one bird species in particular ? the black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) ? made five times more visits to noisy sites than quiet ones.

"Black-chinned hummingbirds may prefer noisy sites because another bird species that preys on their nestlings, the western scrub jay, tends to avoid those areas," Francis said.

Pollen transfer was also more common in the noisy sites. If more hummingbird visits and greater pollen transfer translate to higher seed production for the plants, the results suggest that "hummingbird-pollinated plants such as scarlet gilia may indirectly benefit from noise," Francis explained.

Another set of experiments revealed that noise may indirectly benefit some plants, but is bad news for others.

In a second series of experiments at the same study site, the researchers set out to find out what noise might mean for tree seeds and seedlings, using one of the dominant trees in the area ? the pi?on pine (Pinus edulis).

Pi?on pine seeds that aren't plucked from their cones fall to the ground and are eaten by birds and other animals. To find out if noise affected the number of pi?on pine seeds that animals ate, the researchers scattered pi?on pine seeds underneath 120 pi?on pine trees in noisy and quiet sites, using a motion-triggered camera to figure out what animals took the seeds.

After three days, a number of animals were spotted feeding on the seeds, including mice, chipmunks, squirrels, birds and rabbits. But two animals in particular differed between quiet and noisy sites ?mice, which preferred noisy sites, and western scrub jays, which avoided them altogether.

Pi?on pine seeds that are eaten by mice don't survive the passage through the animal's gut, Francis explained, so the boost in mouse populations near noisy sites could be bad news for pine seedlings in those areas.

In contrast, a single western scrub jay may take hundreds to thousands of seeds, only to hide them in the soil to eat later in the year. The seeds they fail to relocate will eventually germinate, so the preference of western scrub jays for quiet areas means that pi?on pines in those areas are likely to benefit.

In keeping with their seed results, the researchers counted the number of pi?on pine seedlings and found that they were four times as abundant in quiet sites compared with noisy ones.

It may take decades for a pi?on pine to grow from a seedling into a full-grown tree, Francis said. This means the consequences of noise may last longer than we thought. "Fewer seedlings in noisy areas might eventually mean fewer mature trees, but because pi?on pines are so slow-growing the shift could have gone undetected for years, he explained.

"Fewer pi?on pine trees would mean less critical habitat for the hundreds of species that depend on them for survival," he added.

Aziz Ansari releases comedy special online for $5

(AP) ? Aziz Ansari is bringing his new standup special straight to his fans. The "Parks and Recreation" star is bypassing cable networks to release his latest comedy special on his website.

Ansari's "Dangerously Delicious" standup special will be available online worldwide for $5 beginning Tuesday.

"It seemed like the smartest way to deliver it," the 29-year-old comedian said. Fans can download or stream the 60-minute show without commercials or restrictions.

Ansari is the latest entertainer to bypass the big guys and sell his material straight to his fans. Radiohead famously did it with their pay-what-you-wish download of "In Rainbows" in 2007, and comedian Louis C.K. opened the door for comics do to the same when he sold his "Live at the Beacon Theater" standup special online in December and brought in more than $1 million in the first two weeks.

(Radiohead didn't reveal sales figures for "In Rainbows", but experts estimate the band collected at least $2 million and as much as $10 million.)

"It seems like this is the thing to do at this moment when so much is changing and nobody's really figured out how to do anything," Ansari said, adding that he was inspired by the popularity of his comedy clips on YouTube. "In this era, the way people consume media, the way people release media has not caught up."

Louis C.K. said he'd go straight to his audience again, and after the success of his "Beacon Theater" specials, would consider selling his show tickets the same way ? "keeping my price as far down as possible, not over marketing to you, keeping as few people between you and me as possible in the transaction," he wrote on his website a few days after his special went on sale.

The straight-to-fans approach works especially well for comedy, Ansari said: "It makes sense that comedians would embrace something like this where you have so much control over how you're releasing stuff... comedians are used to being autonomous anyway."

Still, such online success mostly belongs to artists with established audiences, says Karen North, director of the USC Annenberg Program in Online Communities.

Direct-to-consumer entertainment is a growing trend, "but I don't think it's going to destroy the studio system," she said.

"If you have a following, it's great, because you have people to announce it to, people to anticipate it and people to search for you. When you release content, it will be found and purchased or found and appreciated," she said. "Going straight to consumer if you don't have some kind of following is a bit of a needle in a haystack," and time-strapped audiences rely on studios and talent-scouts to curate the endless entertainment content available online.

Like Louis C.K., Ansari funded his production and the website to sell it. By making the special available around the world, he's counting on his fans ? including the 1.7 million who follow him on Twitter ? to help him recoup his costs. He can even tell them about it in person during his "Buried Alive" tour, which begins next month in New Jersey and continues through the summer.

Profits for Louis C.K.'s online special so exceeded his costs that he wrote on his website that he would give his staff $250,000 in bonuses, donate $280,000 to charity and keep $220,000 for himself.

"To me," he wrote, "220k is enough out of a million."
