Peacock Sighting in Luzerne County Community

A rather unusual visitor has made an appearance in one Luzerne County community.

Neighbors living in Penn Lake Park near White Haven said a peacock has been spotted by several people there.

?I immediately started taking pictures.?

A Penn Lake Park resident named Karen described her encounter with a surprising guest that strolled up to her house.

?It just caught my eye because it was so peculiar and it was a peacock,? said Karen.

Karen sent those pictures of the colorful bird into Newswatch 16.

Karen is just one of several residents in the community near White Haven to spot the bird.

Tony Pierentoni said he was in his yard when he saw the peacock, walking down the street.

?It walked through this person?s yard, our neighbor?s. Then it walked down the road over here,? said Pierentoni.? ?It was down here when we first saw it on the road. My neighbor said his dogs came out and barked at it and flew up into a tree.?

Many believe the bird is a pet on the loose.

?I really hope that this helps the owners find their lost pet because obviously it does belong to someone,? said Karen.

Penn Lake Park Council President Jack Kile said he didn?t believe the reports of a peacock sighting.

?I thought it?s probably a turkey because we get people here from the city and they don?t know diddly, you know? They get excited if a possum runs through their yard and then I heard it was a peacock,? said Kile.

Despite all those eye-witness accounts, we circled the lake repeatedly searching for the elusive fowl with no luck.

People said they haven?t seen the bird in about a day.

While neighbors we spoke with said they have no intention of catching the peacock themselves, they will keep an eye out for it, to make sure it?s okay.

Elusive element 113, long sought by scientists, finally created in Japan

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the periodic table.?

By Clara Moskowitz,?LiveScience Senior Writer / September 27, 2012

Scientists at Japan's RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science say they've finally succeeded in creating the synthetic element 113.

Scientists in Japan think they've finally created the elusive element 113, one of the missing items on the periodic table of elements.

Element 113 is an atom with 113 protons in its nucleus ? a type of matter that must be created inside a laboratory because it is not found naturally on Earth.?Heavier and heavier synthetic elements?have been created over the years, with the most massive one being element 118, temporarily named ununoctium.

But element 113 has been stubbornly hard to create. After years of trying, researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science in Japan said today (Sept. 26) they finally did so. On Aug. 12, the unstable element was formed and quickly decayed, leaving the team with data to cite as proof of the accomplishment.

"For over nine years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Kosuke Morita, leader of the research group, said in a statement. [Graphic: Nature's Tiniest Particles Explained]

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a?new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the?periodic table. Until now, only scientists in the United States, Russia and Germany have had that chance.

"I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day 113 would be ours," Morita said. "For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

Scientists are continually trying to create bigger and bigger atoms, both for the joy of discovery and for the knowledge these new elements can offer about how atoms work.

Most things in the universe are made of very simple elements, such as hydrogen (which has one proton), carbon (six) and oxygen (eight). For each proton, atoms generally have roughly the same number of neutrons and electrons. Yet the more protons and neutrons that are packed into an atom's nucleus, the more unstable the atom can become. Scientists wonder if there is a?limit to how large atoms can be.

The first synthetic element was created in 1940, and so far 20 different elements have been made. All of these are unstable and last only seconds, at most, before breaking apart into smaller elements.

To synthesize element 113, Morita and his team collided zinc nuclei (with 30 protons each) into a thin layer of bismuth (which contains 83 protons). When 113 was created, it quickly decayed by shedding alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons each. This process happened six times, turning element 113 into element 111, then 109, 107, 105, 103 and finally, element 101, Mendelevium (also a synthetic element).

Morita's group seemed to create element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, but the complete decay chain was not observed, so the discovery couldn't be confirmed. Now that this specific pattern resulting in Mendelevium has been seen, the scientists say it "provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain."

Do Women's Periods Really Sync Up? | Greatist

Any woman can relate, and any man within eyeshot has probably witnessed the following scenario: A woman suffering from mind-numbing cramps, hobbling over to the closest female coworker?s desk for pharmaceutical relief, and bonding over their synced cycles. If women spend enough time around female friends or co-workers, they?re bound to get on the same schedule? right? Greatist examines the science behind the sync.

Sync Up or Sex Up ? The Need-to-Know

In 1971, a study speculated that regular contact with other women could affect female?s menstrual cycles. Researchers found social interaction was key to matched cycles, and close friends and women who were in contact for a substantial portion of every day (say, hanging out or working together) were more likely to sync up than women who merely lived in proximity to each other (e.g., on the same floor of a dorm)[][]. Follow-up studies suggested pheromones were responsible and that ?menstrual synchrony? (the technical term for syncing) might be just the tip of the iceberg: It?s possible periods and ovulation could be socially regulated throughout a woman?s lifespan, from puberty to pregnancy and everywhere in between[][].

But while many researchers uphold the syncing theory, boy has there been a backlash. The pro-syncing crowd has been criticized for poor research methods, and the existence of natural synchrony hasn?t been confirmed in non-human primate studies[][][][][].

In fact, synced cycles might not make sense evolutionarily. Syncing up in a hunter-gatherer tribe, for example, would mean that for a week or so, no woman would be able to get pregnant ? not ideal when you?re responsible for procreating the human race[]. Instead of having matched cycles, women might unknowingly sync up phases of ?sexual receptivity? and the lack thereof ? meaning one woman is ready to get pregnant while another is just starting to menstruate, giving fertile women a more diverse choice of mates[]. (Of course, these are all very biological arguments, operating on the presumption that every woman?s goal in life is to get pregnant.)

Menstrual Mystery ? The Answer/Debate

Unfortunately, there isn?t a definitive answer to the science of syncing, says Frederick Naftolin, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Reproductive Biology Research at NYU. Synchronization is possible ? in non-human animals, anyway. Manually matching up cycles (typically with the hormone progesterone) is key to many agricultural areas that rely on artificial insemination of cows, goats, and buffalos, as synchrony allows for simultaneous impregnation of a herd[]. But evidence for naturally-occurring human synchrony hasn?t been confirmed via adequately controlled, randomized trials.

Still, some researchers strongly maintain?menstrual synchrony is real[][]. Anecdotal evidence certainly seems to support the idea of syncing, says Martha Thomas, Associate Residency Program Director in the OB/GYN department at York Hospital/Wellspan Health. And it?s hard to say how factors like stress, sexual partners, and birth control play into the syncing game ? if synchrony does exist, it?s possible these factors override it, making matched cycles appear less common than they might actually be[].

But this is mostly speculation, stresses Thomas. Most contemporary research holds that it?s unlikely women will actually sync up month after month after month, especially because the length of individuals? cycles can vary so dramatically[]. What seems most likely is that women don?t actually synchronize, but rather have the occasional synced period when their cycles? lengths randomly overlap.

Surprised? Us too. But we?ll still share the Midol, whether or not we?re suffering too.

Thanks to Dr. Frederick Naftolin and Dr. L. Martha Ann Thomas for their help with this article.

Melatonin and exercise work against Alzheimer's in mice

Thursday, September 27, 2012

The combination of two neuroprotective therapies, voluntary physical exercise, and the daily intake of melatonin has been shown to have a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in rodents with three different mutations of Alzheimer's disease.

A study carried out by a group of researchers from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute (IIBB), in collaboration with the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, shows the combined effect of neuroprotective therapies against Alzheimer's in mice.

Daily voluntary exercise and daily intake of melatonin, both of which are known for the effects they have in regulating circadian rhythm, show a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in the 3xTg-AD mouse, which has three mutations of Alzheimer's disease.

"For years we have known that the combination of different anti-aging therapies such as physical exercise, a Mediterranean diet, and not smoking adds years to one's life," Coral Sanfeliu, from the IIBB, explains. "Now it seems that melatonin, the sleep hormone, also has important anti-aging effects".

The experts analysed the combined effect of sport and melatonin in 3xTg-AD mice which were experiencing an initial phase of Alzheimer's and presented learning difficulties and changes in behaviour such as anxiety and apathy.

The mice were divided into one control group and three other groups which would undergo different treatments: exercise ?unrestricted use of a running wheel?, melatonin ?a dose equivalent to 10 mg per kg of body weight?, and a combination of melatonin and voluntary physical exercise. In addition, a reference group of mice were included which presented no mutations of the disease.

"After six months, the state of the mice undergoing treatment was closer to that of the mice with no mutations than to their own initial pathological state. From this we can say that the disease has significantly regressed," Sanfeliu states.

The results, which were published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, show a general improvement in behaviour, learning, and memory with the three treatments.

These procedures also protected the brain tissue from oxidative stress and provided good levels of protection from excesses of amyloid beta peptide and hyperphosphorylated TAU protein caused by the mutations. In the case of the mitochondria, the combined effect resulted in an increase in the analysed indicators of improved performance which were not observed independently.

Treatment not easily transferable to humans

"Transferring treatments which are effective in animals to human patients is not always consistent, given that in humans the disease develops over several years, so that when memory loss begins to surface, the brain is already very deteriorated," the IIBB expert points out.

However, several clinical studies have found signs of physical and mental benefits in sufferers of Alzheimer's resulting from both treatments. The authors maintain that, until an effective pharmacological treatment is found, adopting healthy living habits is essential for reducing the risk of the disease appearing, as well as reducing the severity of its effects.

The melatonin debate

The use of melatonin, a hormone synthesized from the neurotransmitter serotonin, has positive effects which can be used for treating humans. With the approval of melatonin as a medication in the European Union in 2007, clinical testing on this molecule has been increasing. It has advocates as well as detractors, and the scientific evidence has not yet been able to unite the differing views.

According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, melatonin is probably effective in sleeping disorders in children with autism and mental retardation and in blind people; and possibly effective in case of jet-lag, sunburns and preoperative anxiety.

"However, other studies which use melatonin as medication show its high level of effectiveness," Dar?o Acu?a-Castroviejo explains. He has been studying melatonin for several years at the Health Sciences Technology Park of the University of Granada.

The expert points out that international consensus already exists, promoted by the British Association for Psychopharmacology ?also published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in 2010?, which has melatonin as the first choice treatment for insomnia in patients above the age of 55. This consensus is now being transferred to cases of insomnia in children.

Its use in treating neurodegenerative diseases is acquiring increasing scientific support in lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, in Alzheimer's, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

"Even though many more studies and clinical tests are still required to assess the doses of melatonin which will be effective for a wide range of diseases, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of melatonin mean that its use is highly recommended for diseases which feature oxidative stress and inflammation," Acu?a-Castroviejo states.

This is the case for diseases such as epilepsy, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and even the aging process itself, where data is available pointing to the benefits of melatonin, though said data is not definitive.

Golf ball not the only thing bouncing at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? If pomp and circumstance, color-coordinated outfits and flag-waving throngs are your thing, then the Ryder Cup is the only competition that matters this weekend.

Just know that behind closed doors, the same U.S. team battling Europe on the course for golfing glory and a gold trophy will be staging a little championship of its own.

"The Ryder Cup is all about ping pong, everybody," Bubba Watson announced Thursday.

This was just a few hours before the matches' opening ceremony, and he wasn't entirely kidding.

"When you bring your own paddles in cases, a briefcase with a paddle in it, then obviously it's about ping pong. Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar have their own cases for their paddles," Watson said, chuckling. "It's nuts."

The three tables in the Americans' team room rarely get a rest. There are the "friendlies" ? light-hearted, mixed-doubles matches involving husband-and-wife teams such as the Mickelsons; and then there is the "blood-and-guts" division ? apparently, any singles match involving Mickelson, Phil not Amy.

No one seems certain which U.S. captain first came up with the idea as a way for teammates to bond, let off steam or take their minds off golf for a few moments. Captain Davis Love III was reminded that back when he first played a dice game called "Pass the Pigs" and "Jenga" was the extent of the entertainment. But everyone agreed that as soon as the ping pong table turned up in the team room, once the boasting and trash-talking began, and the line of players calling "next" only got longer.

"Some of these guys think of themselves as table-tennis players, not ping pong players," recalled Paul Azinger, who captained the U.S. side in 2008, the Americans' only win in the last five meetings. "But believe me, they're not that good."

To make the distinction between the Olympic version of the game (table tennis) and the recreational one (ping pong), Azinger took a big step back.

"Most guys think they're doing this," he said, fixing a grim expression on his face, then tracing the long sweeping arc of a full swing.

Then he stepped forward, screwed up his features and flipped his hand in front of his chest casually from side to side.

"All they're really doing is this," Azinger continued. "Like I said, it's just ping pong."

Even so, it sounds a lot more spirited than what their European counterparts have been doing to while away the after-dinner hours in their team room. That was rumored to be a knock-off version of "Dancing With The Stars." The story was confirmed by Englishman Lee Westwood, who added sheepishly, "I've been told I have nice hips."

What began as an equally pointless competition between U.S. teammates took a turn for the serious in 2004, the first time Mickelson and Tiger Woods played together. Unfriendly rivals back then, they lost both their matches to Europe and determining who was the better ping pong player became one way to decide who should get the lion's share of the blame for the mess they'd left behind on the course.

Ultimately, both claimed victory. Now, to avoid any friction, they play doubles as a team. But Kuchar is the consensus favorite to take the singles crown this time around, which helps explain why Mickelson has avoided playing more than a handful of points against him.

"I know Phil is not playing Kuch until Sunday," Steve Stricker said, "I think because he doesn't want to get any bad mojo going before the tournament starts."

Azinger is working as a TV analyst at this Ryder Cup and keeping track of the goings-on in the U.S. team room from a distance. Even if he were a betting man, the former player and captain still isn't sure where he'd put his money. Asked whether he favors Kuchar or Mickelson, Azinger didn't have to think long.

"Mickelson," he said, trying to keep a straight face. "But Amy, not Phil."

97% Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" is an insightful, engaging and inspiring documentary about the activist and famed artist. That having been said, I am sure there are some people who might find it strange that I use the word inspiring for an artist who makes his art from smashing antique vases and pointing his middle finger at landmarks, especially Tiananmen Square.(By the way, does anybody know if there are any photos of his middle finger in front of Yankee Stadium?) I think both are symbolic of how nothing is sacred, especially the Chinese government who he is in a running battle with to gain transparency into the inner workings of its bureaucracy. After they shut down his blog, he went on Twitter and distributed his documentaries for free over the internet. His style is definitely confrontational, as somebody says he reminds him of a hooligan, but in a good way.(As Ani DiFranco once sang, being nice is overrated.) Remember, we are all hooligans, right now. Ai Weiwei's activism hit a critical point when he criticized the treatment of the poor during the 2008 Olympics and the response to the Sichuan earthquake which killed several thousand children in faulty construction that has been compared to tofu. As New Yorker magazine correspondent Evan Osnos points out, Ai Weiwei was initially inspired politically by the Iran Contra hearings when he was living in the United States that sought to hold a government responsible but did not work as well as some of us would have liked. So, instead of the fortune his son would inherit, he will have something much more precious to leave him. Now, if I can only figure out if the cat opening the door is supposed to be a metaphor or just darn cute.

Factors To Consider In Senior Care | Home Solar Panels Cost

Senior citizens may have to consider going to a community or a facility if they start requiring more attention that their family can no longer provide. There are many options for senior care new jersey, each designed to address different sets of needs. Here are some tips to help you begin your search for the right facility.

It is important to know the needs of the senior citizen. By knowing what is required, you will know how much attention or assistance is needed and you can choose the corresponding facility. These facilities provide different levels of care and can offer many kinds of services.

Make sure that the building is safe. A sure way to do this is to visit the facility and take a look at how it is structured. The stairs should be easy to climb, the floors should have enough traction and the like. The building should be gated and have personnel who monitor the activities inside it.

The staff are important in maintaining the well being of the residents and are responsible for the upkeep of the facility. Observe if the place is kept clean and if there are any unpleasant odors when you walk around. Assess how the staff interact with the residents and see if they take their responsibilities seriously.

Consider the amenities that are installed. There should be common rooms, centers for fitness, recreational activities and so on. The residents should be as comfortable as possible in their rooms. There should be enough space to accommodate them and the premises, as a whole should be well maintained.

If you plan to keep regular visits with the elderly, then choose an establishment near your community. It can also be more convenient for the resident if they are located near the malls or other sites for recreation. Consider getting them in a facility that are near hospitals to make it easy for them to travel for consultations.

Evaluate the medical services that the facility can offer. Some residents may not need much medical attention but there will be times when health problems begin to develop into more severe forms. In such situations, it will be convenient if there is already a licensed practitioner on site or at least medical professionals who can provide temporary help while arrangements are being made.

There are varying costs for senior care new jersey. Before you pick an establishment, take a look at the rates of a few facilities so that you can pick the best service with what you can afford to spend. If you will be using insurance to cover the costs, then check if it is accepted by the establishment.

Obama at the UN, in shadow of campaign politics

NEW YORK (AP) ? Campaign politics shadowing every word, President Barack Obama will step before the world and declare that anti-American rage and riots among Muslims abroad will never force the United States to backtrack on diplomacy.

In his final international address before the November election, Obama on Tuesday has a United Nations stage afforded to presidents, not presidential challengers. He will use it to try to boost his political standing without mentioning his opponent.

Obama's comments to the General Assembly will be scrutinized around the globe and by the gathering of presidents and prime ministers in the famed United Nations hall, given the tumult, terrorism, nuclear threats and poverty that bind so many nations. He will respond to unrest in the Muslim world and seek to underscore U.S. resolve in keeping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Yet, were there any doubt that the U.S. presidential campaign hung heavy over Obama's speech to the General Assembly, Republican rival Mitt Romney shredded it by assailing Obama's foreign affairs leadership on the eve of the president's speech.

"This is time for a president who will shape events in the Middle East, not just be merciful or be at the mercy of the events," Romney said Monday. Focusing on the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya and mass bloodshed in Syria, Romney repeatedly ridiculed Obama's comment that nations moving toward democracy after the Arab Spring face "bumps in the road."

That prompted White House spokesman Jay Carney to fire back at Romney: "There is a certain rather desperate attempt to grasp at words and phrases here to find political advantage, and in this case that's profoundly offensive."

Obama's activities at the United Nations said plenty, too: There are not many of them. Campaigning is his imperative.

He is skipping the private meetings with key allies that a U.S. president typically schedules when the whole international community comes to New York. The president will spend only 24 hours in New York in total this time, and he spent some of it Monday to appear on "The View," giving a talk show interview intended to sell his election pitch to a big TV audience.

The dominant theme of Obama's U.N. speech, according to his aides and Obama's own recent words, will be to underscore his response to the protests raging in places across the Middle East and North Africa. As he has for days, Obama will condemn the violence, defend democratic principles of free speech and promise no U.S. withdrawal of outreach.

Much of the growing ire is aimed at the United States because of an anti-Islam film produced in this country, but the White House has now deemed the attack on its consulate in Libya a "terrorist attack" and has not ruled that it was premeditated. Four Americans, including ambassador Chris Stevens, died in what Obama now says "wasn't just a mob action."

Obama noted in the TV interview Monday that many Libyans have protested the extremist strains in their nation.

"Part of the message for us is that the overwhelming majority of Muslims, they want the same things that families here want," Obama said. "They want opportunity. They want jobs. They want peace. ... We're going to stay engaged. Because ultimately, over the long term, our security is going to be tied up with the success of these countries."

In a preview of Obama's speech, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed for Muslims to show "dignity" as they protest the film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

"Dignity does not come from avenging insults," she said in a speech to her husband's Clinton Global Initiative. Romney and Obama were to speak there as well on Tuesday.

The secretary of state was also standing in for Obama. She saw the presidents of Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya and Pakistan. She was due later in the week to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

For U.S. presidents, the yearly United Nations address is always laced with domestic politics even though the speeches are scripted without campaign references. Wars and the failed attempts at Mideast peace have dominated in recent years.

Romney's campaign made the campaign linkage directly Monday.

"On the eve of his United Nations address, President Obama's foreign policy is in disarray," spokesman Ryan Williams said. "As president, Mitt Romney will repair our relationships abroad and create a safer, more secure nation."

Polling shows Obama has a clear edge over Romney when voters are asked who they think is a stronger leader and would better protect the country.

Brother of Ravens WR Torrey Smith killed on cycle

BALTIMORE (AP) ? The brother of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith has been killed in a motorcycle accident.

Tevin Chris Jones, 19, died of injuries he sustained in a crash in West Moreland County in northeast Virginia, according to the Ravens.

Smith was notified at the team hotel in Baltimore shortly after 1 a.m. and immediately left to be with his family.

Smith posted on his Twitter account: "I can't believe my little brother is gone...be thankful for your loved ones and tell them you love them...this is the hardest thing ever."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a statement: "This is devastatingly sad, sad news. Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family."

Smith is one of seven children of Monica Chante Jenkins.

It was unclear whether Smith would play Sunday night for the Ravens against the New England Patriots.

"Torrey's priority is his family. We understand that completely," Harbaugh said.

If Smith does not suit up, he will be replaced by Jacoby Jones.

Now in his second season with Baltimore, Smith grew up in Virginia before attending the University of Maryland.

Floods, landslides displace 1 million in India; 33 dead

GUWAHATI, India (Reuters) - Floods and landslides caused by relentless rain in northeast India have killed at least 33 people and displaced more than a million over the past week, officials said on Monday.

At least 21 people were killed in landslides and another eight were missing in the mountainous state of Sikkim, said state government spokesman A.S. Tobgay.

In Assam, still recovering from deadly floods that hit the tea-growing state in July, eight people were killed and 20 were missing, police said.

Floods displaced nearly one million in that state alone, and many were now sheltering in camps or beside roads, which tend to be built above the land they pass through, a senior official in Assam's disaster management authority said.

Four people were buried and killed in mudslides in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, police said.

The military and federal disaster response teams have launched operations to move people to higher ground by helicopter or in rubber boats. Nearly 100 shelters have been opened to accommodate the displaced.

In July, at least 110 people were killed and more than 400,000 people were left homeless in Assam during floods which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said were among the worst in recent times.

Over the past 60 years, successive governments have built levees along most of the Brahmaputra, which is Assam's main river and is fed by Himalayan snow melt and some of the world's heaviest rainfall.

But experts say the embankments are not only poorly maintained but are a discredited form of flood management.

Floods have inundated three national parks in Assam including Kaziranga National Park, where two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses live. Some animals have been forced out of the park to nearby hills.

Findlay Courier: Former Kalida coach indicted

By Ryan Dunn
Staff Writer

PUTNAM COUNTY, OH (FINDLAY COURIER) -? A former coach and technology coordinator for Kalida Local Schools has been indicted in Putnam County on eight felony charges, including allegations that he committed sex crimes with at least three teenage girls.

Jeremy Stober, 41, of Kalida, faces four counts of gross sexual imposition for allegedly compelling females to engage in sexual contact in August 2001, August 2010, June 2011 and August 2011. Each of the counts, handed up by a Putnam County grand jury, is a fourth-degree felony.

Stober is also charged with a count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, for allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a student about 18 years old while serving as a school employee in June 2010. He also is charged with attempted sexual battery, a fourth-degree felony, for trying to do so in November 2011.

Between August 2009 and January 2010, Stober also allegedly solicited sexual conduct from someone whose age was between 13 and 16. He faces a fifth-degree felony count of importuning.

He also was indicted on a third-degree felony charge of tampering with evidence, alleging he altered evidence from about August 2009 through May 24.

Stober coached volleyball, basketball and baseball for Kalida until he was placed on leave, with pay, on May 24.

A statement released by Superintendent Don Horstman said Stober left the position in May during "an investigation into allegations that he had engaged in inappropriate communications and/or contact with a student or students."

The school contacted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and Children's Services upon learning of the allegations, Horstman said.

Stober began an unpaid leave of absence at the start of this school year, and that leave continues, Horstman said.

Assistant Putnam County Prosecutor Todd Schroeder could not be reached for comment Monday.

Frustration and turmoil as world leaders meet

(AP) ? Democratic uprisings across the Arab world and the Palestinians' bid for U.N. membership sparked excitement and hope at last year's meeting of world leaders. But with war raging in Syria, the Palestinian application sidelined, and deadly protests generated by an anti-Islamic video, the mood as this year's U.N. gathering begins is one of disappointment and frustration.

More than 120 presidents, prime ministers and monarchs meeting this week under heavy security at the U.N. General Assembly and in sideline events will also be preoccupied by rising tension over Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of an Israeli strike against Tehran's nuclear facilities, al-Qaida's inroads in the Sahel region of west Africa, especially in Mali, and the first decline in years in international aid to help developing countries combat poverty.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon predicted that the ministerial session, which starts Tuesday, will be among the busiest ever, reflecting "the tumultuous time in which we live ? a time of turmoil and transition." It is also taking place "against a backdrop of widespread violence linked to intolerance," he said.

Ahead of the opening ministerial session, which President Barack Obama will address, the U.N. chief has invited leaders to the first high-level meeting on the rule of law on Monday, hoping they "will send a strong signal to the world's people that they are serious about establishing well-functioning institutions and delivering justice."

Diplomats aren't expecting any breakthroughs on the deadlock over Syria, which Ban said "will be foremost in our minds," despite a number of sideline meetings starting Monday when the new U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi briefs the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors on his recent talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other leaders in the region.

"To increase pressure and to increase the isolation of the regime of Assad is one of the goals of this week," Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told reporters Sunday.

The Syrian conflict has bitterly divided the most powerful members of the Security Council, paralyzing the only U.N. body that can impose global sanctions and authorize military action. Russia, Syria's key protector, and China, have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to stop the violence and start political talks with opponents of his family's 40-year dictatorship who began demonstrating against his regime 18 months ago.

Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig, the current Security Council president, said "change in the Arab world" will be uppermost in the minds of the leaders ? as was the case at last year's session.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist who was sworn in on June 30 after the first democratic elections in the country's modern history, will be addressing the 193-member assembly for the first time on Wednesday. So too will Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took office in February following more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer the country's transition to democracy.

Last year, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas stole the spotlight with his submission of an application for Palestine to become the 194th member state of the United Nations. The United States, Israel's closest ally, made clear that it would veto any application until the Palestinians and Israelis negotiate an end to their decades-long conflict.

So Abbas is expected to come to the General Assembly on Thursday with a more modest proposal ? to upgrade Palestine's current status as a U.N. observer to a non-member observer state ? but likely putting off the date for submission of a resolution to the assembly, where there are no vetoes, until after the U.S. presidential election in November.

The Palestinians expect overwhelming support from the assembly for the enhanced U.N. status, which they hope will give broad international legitimacy to the pre-1967 lines as Palestine's border and grant them access to U.N. agencies and possibly the International Criminal Court.

With no sign of an end to the Security Council's paralysis over Syria, Wittig said Germany chose to focus the council's ministerial session Wednesday on something new and positive in the Mideast ? "the emergence of the Arab League as a regional actor that has proved to be essential for conflict resolution."

The 21-member Arab League has shaken off decades of near total submission to the will of the region's leaders and is seeking to transform itself following the seismic changes brought about by the Arab Spring. The league has supported the rebels who ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and suspended Syria in response to Assad's brutal crackdown against his opponents.

"This organization is promoting the values that the United Nations is standing for ? human rights, rule of law, democracy, pluralism," the fight against corruption and promoting economic opportunity, Wittig said.

Another issue looming large over the ministerial session is Iran's nuclear program, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convinced that the Iranians are close to developing a nuclear weapon ? which Tehran vehemently denies.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will step down next year, makes his final speech to the General Assembly on Wednesday. Netanyahu speaks on Thursday, before a closed-door meeting of senior diplomats, and possibly ministers, from the six countries trying to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Secretary-General Ban met Ahmadinejad on Sunday and "urged Iran to take the measures necessary to build international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The U.N. chief also raised the potentially harmful consequences of inflammatory rhetoric "from various countries in the Middle East" and "the grave regional implications of the worsening situation in Syria and underlined the devastating humanitarian impact," Nesirky said.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said the U.S.-produced film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad will be at the top of the agenda of a ministerial meeting of its 57 members on the sidelines of the assembly. He said the international community needs to unite behind action to implement international law which warns against any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, aggression or violence.

There will also be sessions to promote the achievement of U.N. anti-poverty goals by 2015, sustainable energy and an end to polio.

Cancer Fund Gala Set for Heavy Metal Legend + More News

We may have lost Ronnie James Dio to stomach cancer in 2010, but his memory and his honor live on. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, founded in memory of the world-renowned voice of Dio, Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell, will host its second Awards Gala on Halloween night, which is Wednesday, October 31. The event takes place at the Avalon, located in Hollywood. Awards will be presented to seven distinguished honorees for their contributions to spreading awareness of fund's important work. Sail the high seas with Prong this fall. The band will perform as part of the Metal Insider Rocks Off Concert Cruise aboard the Star of Palm Beach. The show will take place on Friday October 19 and is an official CMJ Show. This or the Apocalypse, For Sleeping or Jumping and Eminence will support. The cruise departs from Pier 40, located at West Houston St. at West Side Highway.

"Prong has not played NYC since the release of our latest album Carved Into Stone," said frontman Tommy Victor. "Actually, we haven't done a gig anywhere in the five boroughs in a very long time. So I'm happy to announce our return home as we board the Rocks Off Cruise on Oct 19th for the Metal Insider Party at CMJ. The boat rolls out of New York Harbor and from what I hear it'll be circling the Statue of Liberty while we're on stage. What a great way to celebrate our return!" [Via Press Release]

Job for a Cowboy's Jonny Davy is the only original member of the band, but he feels that the current lineup is strong as ever. However, if there are anymore shifts in membership, it could do the band in. "When you're that young, so many things can happen with school, college ... when you go on tour, when you're that young, so many things can happen. I feel like if we started this band in our mid-20s, we would have a solid lineup all the way through. If this lineup ever changes at this point, Job for a Cowboy is done." Let's hope no one leaves, since we need JFAC's deathcore in our lives. [Loudwire]

Crowds turn out for Chch schools protest | Otago Daily Times Online ...

More than a thousand people have turned out for a lunchtime protest against a shake-up of Christchurch schools.

The crowd of around 1500 people, including many children and teachers, waved placards at the Hagley netball courts.

Some of the signs said "Save our schools", along with "Democracy hard won, defend it" and "What the Hekia are you getting at", in reference to Education Minister Hekia Parata.

The government last week announced a proposal to close 13 schools and merge 18 others as part of a $NZ1 billion ($A801.41 million) rebuild and realignment of education in the earthquake-damaged city.

Options for one of the affected schools, Shirley Boys High School, include a merger, a dual-session system with Christchurch Boys High School or closure. A total of 173 schools are not impacted by merger or closure plans.

One of the speakers at the rally, Manning Intermediate principal Richard Chambers, told the crowd "the way things have been proposed to us make having discussions extremely difficult".

"Change will happen but let us be part of it. The changes proposed could be a blight on Christchurch for generations."

The rally follows a similar protest on Wednesday night, when around 500 people gathered at the Bridge of Remembrance protesting against a lack of democracy in their city's decision-making.

The Hagley Park protest was organised by former Phillipstown School board of trustees member Wayne Hawker.

Phillipstown has been mooted to merge with Woolston School on an unknown site.

"If people think that this will be the end of it, then think again," he said last week.
