iPad 4 vs. iPad 2 vs. iPad mini: Which iPad should you get?

iPad 4 vs. iPad 2 vs. iPad mini: Which iPad should you get?

The latest, greatest, iPad -- in this case the late 2012 iPad 4 -- can't be considered a no-brainer buy this year because Apple has now also introduced the all-new iPad mini. The iPad 2 has also stuck around in some sort of limbo-like middle ground, further complicating your purchasing decision.

Power vs portability, starting at $329 vs. starting at $399 or $499 -- there's a lot of factors to consider.

(Late) 2012 iPad product line

Just when you thought Apple had already introduced the new iPad this year, they went and introduced a newer one! If you haven't taken the iPad plunge yet, or if you're looking to upgrade from another tablet or a first generation iPad, that just means you have even better value for your money.

iPad mini: $329 Wi-Fi, $459 Wi-Fi + cellular

The iPad mini is slightly cheaper than the iPad 4 or the iPad 2, but that's just a side benefit of being a little smaller and a lot lighter. In terms of hardware, it's got basically the same body and components as the 2012 iPod touch 5, including the aluminum unibody, Apple A5 processor, and storage options. It has the iPad 2-style screen, however, at 1024x768, only shrunk down from 9.7 inches to 7.9 inches. That makes it slightly higher density -- the same 163 ppi as the iPhone 3GS if you're keeping score -- than the 132 ppi iPad 2, but nowhere near the 264 ppi of the iPad 4.

The lightness is the biggest differentiator, however. You can hold it easily in one hand, and while it's not small enough to be an on-the-go style device like the iPhone or iPod touch, it's not relegated to be a sitting-down, on-you-lap style device like the full sized iPad either. It's much better lying down, and much easier to hold for longer periods of time. It's also easier to stash in big jacket pocket or small carry bad.

Apple offers the iPad mini Wi-Fi at three price points depending on the amount of storage:

  • 16GB - $329
  • 32GB - $429
  • 64GB - $529

If you want it with 3G GSM/CDMA, and 4G LTE version, the prices go up $130:

  • 16GB - $459
  • 32GB - $559
  • 64GB - $659

If you value portability over the power of the processor and prettiness of the screen, get the iPad mini.

iPad 2 (2011) 16GB - $399 Wi-Fi, $529 Wi-Fi + 3G

iPad 2: Everything you need to know

If you want it with 3G GSM/CDMA, and 4G LTE version, the prices go up $130:

  • 16GB - $629
  • 32GB - $729
  • 64GB - $829

If you know you want a top of the line iPad, with the latest and greatest features and every bit of cool technology Apple has to offer, then get the new iPad.

Disney Performing Arts: A New Way to Explore Theater & Music

Posted on Wednesday, 24th October 2012 by Nicole Mancini

Are you looking for a way to spruce up your vocal skills? Want to find a sure-fire way to perform confidently during your next music recital??Are you an aspiring actor searching for tips on how to impress the studios at that next big audition? Do you have children interested in the performing arts? If you answered ?yes? to any of these questions, then considering Disney Performing Arts programs may be just what you or a family member needs to showcase and develop talent through exclusive opportunities only Disney can provide.

?

Image:?Study the arts with the pros through Disney Performing Arts, a series of workshops, festivals, and performance opportunities held at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Since 1955, over 30,000 groups from states across America and six different continents have participated in Disney Performing Arts. The program, which is held at both the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in California, is a series of informative workshops, exciting competitions, and entertaining festivals and events designed to help individuals who are interested in performance whether it be vocal, theater, dance, or instrumental. Participants can sing, dance, and shine on Disney stages while building confidence, character, and memories that will last a lifetime.

?

Image:?Disney Performing Arts programs are available for students beginning at age 7.

?

Disney Performing Arts, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, is offered for students in elementary, middle, and high school; there is also a series of programs for those who are in college. Many of the thousands of participants in the program use their experiences to pursue successful careers in the professional performance industry. This includes actress Jennifer Morrison, School of Rock?s Caitlin Hale, and musicians such as Jerry DePizzo of O.A.R., Mike Scheuchzer of Mercy Me, and jazz artist, Jessy J.

?

Image:?Young musicians can learn from professionals through a variety of Disney programs.

?

Disney Performing Arts OnStage

The OnStage program gives students the opportunity to perform live in front of international audiences at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Many park guests are familiar with seeing a high school band march down Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. Middle and high school instrumental, vocal, and dance groups are eligible to audition for such an opportunity with Disney entertainment. Selected groups participate in their ?on stage? performance while learning about the Disney standard for performance excellence. While there, students also have the opportunity to participate in exclusive workshops where they can build confidence, camaraderie, and fine-tune their skills with entertainment professionals.

Workshops for the Arts

Performers looking to advance their skills and build upon their understanding of performance arts can learn from Disney professionals through a series of workshops designed by entertainment experts and taught by Disney cast members. The workshops focus on a variety of topics and include classes such as:

  • Performance Lab
  • Puppet Lab
  • Master Class: Percussion
  • Soundtrack Session: Instrumental
  • Improvisational Acting
  • Soundtrack Session: Vocal
  • Academy Show Choir
  • Auditions & Careers: Acting
  • Disney Broadway Magic
  • Careers in Costuming
  • Disney Sings: Young Performer
  • Disney Dancin?
  • Disney Auxilliration (auxilliary, pom squad, and color guard)

The workshops are offered for a variety of levels beginning with younger performers aged seven and up. Classes are offered in two and three hour formats to instrumental, choral, and dance ensembles, marching bands, theater groups, and auxiliary units. Students will have the chance to practice on Disney stages and other unique locations nearby. Costs vary depending upon the program and its offerings, but begin at $60 per person and can go as high as over $1,000 per group.

Workshop Highlights

I really am amazed at the wide variety of workshop topics that Disney offers through the Performing Arts program. One that struck me as a very unique experience is that of Disney Sings in which students record an excerpt from an animated Disney feature film?s soundtrack. While doing so, they are guided by a professional Disney vocalist who helps build confidence and skill. I also thought that the Puppet Lab was a great offering because it gives students experience working with Disney puppets and mastering techniques needed for live shows. Auditions & Careers: Acting simulates the life of a professional actor including an audition, rehearsal time, and performance of a scene from a Disney production.

Festivals & Competitions

In addition to providing training and opportunities to showcase talent, Disney Performing Arts also offers exciting festivals and competitions for performers. Students can compete during numerous events year around at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Festivals are judged by nationally recognized adjudicators or industry professionals. As a result, students receive valuable feedback that can help in future endeavors.

Festival Disney

One such event is Festival Disney, a bi-annual event held at Walt Disney World on select weekends from March through June. This competitive festival offers middle school and high school performing arts groups a chance to perform and receive feedback from professionals. The event is open to choirs, orchestras, bands, and auxiliary ensembles and even includes awards and medals for the top competitors.

?

Image:?Groups compete and interact with leading music educators at the bi-annual Festival Disney event.

?

The Disney Honors

For those looking for less competition while training, The Disney Honors is a non-competitive festival that takes place each spring in Walt Disney World. According to Disney, it ?challenges students to reach new musical heights and features performances, clinics, guest speakers, and feedback from an outstanding panel of evaluators.? The festival ends with a semi-formal gala celebrating everyone?s achievements. All students are recognized with a commemorative award and medal for their participation in the festival.

Disney Jazz Celebration

One of the most exciting opportunities for middle and high school instrumentalists and vocalists is the Disney Jazz Celebration. This festival brings together students and nationally recognized jazz educators from around the world to perform, critique, and teach in a competitive event over the course of a weekend. During this time, signature events are a part of the celebration and include performances and personalized clinics with renowned jazz artists. Even more so, students also enjoy GRAMMY Camp- Basic Training sessions presented by the GRAMMY foundation; the class includes a panel of music professionals who offer insight into the many music careers available today.

?

Image:?Grammy-nominated saxophonist Kirk Whalum is among the legendary performers who have worked with students at the annual Disney Jazz Celebration.

?

In Closing?

All in all, Disney Performing Arts promises to be an invaluable opportunity for students and young adults to hone skills and learn from professionals. Groups and individuals may participate in the program?s wide variety of offerings. Disney?s?commitment?to excellence proves that these experiences are something any aspiring performer would enjoy and find helpful while training for a career in the arts.

Judge sets early hearing for $7.2 billion card-fee settlement

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge has set an expedited schedule for objectors to weigh in against a proposed $7.2 billion settlement between merchants and credit-card giants Visa Inc and Mastercard Inc , giving opponents less time than expected to fight against initial approval of the potentially historic pact.

The proposed settlement was submitted Friday for preliminary approval by the court. If it receives first preliminary and then final approval, it would be the largest federal antitrust settlement in U.S. history, offering nearly 8 million merchants $7.2 billion in cash and temporary reductions in interchange, or swipe fees, which stores must pay to process credit and debit transactions.

Since it was announced in July, the proposal has been opposed by some of the largest U.S. retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc , and trade groups like the National Retail Federation. Ten of the 19 original stores and trade groups leading the litigation have also come out in opposition.

Retailers and trade groups that oppose the settlement will have until October 31 to file their written objections with the court, according to an order handed down Wednesday. A hearing has been scheduled for November 9 before U.S. District Judge John Gleeson in Brooklyn federal court.

The deadlines set by Gleeson are considerably shorter than parties in the case had anticipated. At recent hearings, a magistrate judge indicated that parties opposing the deal would have until mid-November to file written objections, and a hearing was expected to be scheduled in either December or January.

The expedited schedule "could be a very, very good sign for the settlement," said Bob Stolebarger, a partner at Bryan Cave who is antitrust counsel to the Electronic Payments Coalition, a trade group for credit-card companies and payment networks.

Gleeson also offered his own initial assessment of the deal on Wednesday, saying that "at first blush, it appears to satisfy the threshold requirements for preliminary approval." However, he noted that the legal standard for preliminary approval is lower than that for final approval, and said objections "deserve, and will get, careful consideration by the court."

Visa, Mastercard and lawyers appointed by the court to represent lead merchants have said they are confident that Gleeson will ultimately approve the deal.

But opponents say it does not meet the legal standard of being "fair, reasonable and adequate."

If approved, the settlement would resolve seven years of litigation brought on behalf of stores, restaurants and retailers who accused the credit card companies of conspiring with banks to inflate swipe fees. If it is rejected by the court, the parties could wind up back at square one.

Mayor Bloomberg Announces Challenge Grants to Support Marriage Equality in Maine, Minnesota, and Washington

Total Pledge of $500,000 to Support Local Equality Efforts Aimed at Raising $1 Million

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced challenge grants to support marriage equality campaigns in Maine, Minnesota and Washington. The Mayor pledged $250,000 to Washington United for Marriage, $125,000 to Mainers United for Marriage and $125,000 to Minnesotans United for All Families. The pledges will help each group raise additional money by matching new contributions made in the homestretch of the campaign. If the challenge is successful, it will raise $1 million for the cause of marriage equality in the three states.

?Government has no business denying marriage licenses to a whole class of couples in Maine, Minnesota, Washington or anywhere else,? said Mayor Bloomberg. ?The 14th Amendment guarantees us all equal protection under the law, and marriage equality is the next big step in America?s long march of freedom. The barriers to it are bound to fall; the question is not if but when. I was proud to help support the successful effort to achieve marriage equality in New York State, and I?m proud to stand with supporters of marriage equality around the country this November.?

Mainers United for Marriage?is a coalition supporting Question 1 on Maine ballot, which would allow the state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if passed. A citizens? campaign generated enough signatures, submitted to the Secretary of State, to place Question 1 on the ballot. For more on the coalition in Maine, visit:?www.mainersunited.org.

Minnesotans United for All Families?is a coalition working to defeat a constitutional amendment in Minnesota that reads: ?Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as marriage in Minnesota?? Minnesota State Legislature voted to place the amendment on the ballot. The coalition already has raised $125,000 to match the Mayor?s challenge. For more on the coalition in Minnesota, visit:?www.mnunited.org.

Washington United for Marriage?is a coalition working to pass Referendum 74, which would ratify a bill passed earlier this year and signed by Governor Christine Gregoire legalizing same-sex marriage in the state. For more on the coalition in Washington, visit:?www.washingtonunitedformarriage.org.

Last week, Mayor Bloomberg announced the formation of a new major effort to support candidates and referenda in local, state and federal races across the country. The campaign will target candidates who support ? and oppose ? efforts to crack down on illegal guns and reform education policy. It will also make contributions to marriage equality referenda. Through election day, the Mayor will be backing an eight figure campaign that will support moderates on both sides of the aisle ? as well as independents ? who have shown a willingness to work in a bi-partisan fashion.

Earlier this month, the Mayor announced a $250,000 contribution to Marylanders for Marriage Equality, a group that supports passage of a referendum that would ratify a state law legalizing same-sex marriage. The Mayor will join Maryland Governor Martin O?Malley this Friday at an event in Baltimore to support the effort.

Mayor Bloomberg's support for candidates and causes is his largest effort yet to impact races and referenda across the country. The mayor has a long history of supporting candidates and referenda that reflect his independent and non-partisan approach to government.

Huppert quizzes government on new cancer treatment

The technique, called intensity modulated radiotherapy treatment (IMRT), works by targeting a tumour with more precise doses of radiation while minimizing the damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It has been shown to have reduced side effects and improved cosmetic outcomes.

Julian reminded Parliament that the first UK clinical trials of IMRT were carried out at Addenbrooke?s Hospital funded by a Breast Cancer Campaign.

And the government is launching a new ?15 million fund which could provide thousands more patients with access to the advanced technique.

Julian asked Health Minister, Anna Soubry: ?How many breast cancer patients a year can benefit from IMRT and how will she ensure they all manage to do so??
Ms Soubry said: ?We know that nine per cent of all radical radiotherapy treatments should be delivered using forward planned IMRT and this forward planned IMRT should be used to benefit breast cancer patients.

?A survey of radiotherapy centres was carried out in preparation for the new fund and it showed that 26 per cent of activity was being delivered using forward planned IMRT.?

She offered to investigate the matter further and give more details in writing if Julian wished.

Julian said later: ?It is vitally important that cancer patients have access to the best treatment that we can provide. This new treatment provides targeted radiotherapy to where it is needed making it less destructive and producing less uncomfortable side effects.

?I want to make sure that the money that the government is investing in this new treatment benefits as many people as possible across the country and is not restricted to just a few pilot centres.?

FACT CHECK: Missteps in final presidential debate

(AP) ? Voters didn't always get the straight goods when President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney made their case for foreign policy and national security leadership Monday night before their last super-sized audience of the campaign. A few of their detours into domestic issues were problematic too.

A look at some of their statements and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY on Syria: "What I'm afraid of is we've watched over the past year or so, first the president saying, 'Well, we'll let the U.N. deal with it.' And Assad ? excuse me, Kofi Annan ? came in and said we're going to try to have a cease-fire. That didn't work. Then it went to the Russians and said, 'Let's see if you can do something.' We should be playing the leadership role there."

OBAMA: "We are playing the leadership role."

THE FACTS: Under Obama, the United States has taken a lead in trying to organize Syria's splintered opposition, even if the U.S. isn't interested in military intervention or providing direct arms support to the rebels. The administration has organized dozens of meetings in Turkey and the Middle East aimed at rallying Syria's political groups and rebel formations to agree on a common vision for a democratic future after Syrian President Bashar Assad is defeated. And Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton brought dozens of nations together as part of the Friends of Syria group to combine aid efforts to Syria's opposition and help it win the support of as many as Syrians as possible. The U.S. also is involved in vetting recipients of military aid from America's Arab allies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Romney is partly right in pointing out Obama's failure to win U.N. support for international action in Syria. But the Friends of Syria group has helped bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and other forms of assistance to Syrian civilians and the political opposition.

In trying to describe the strategic importance of seeing Assad defeated, Romney stumbled in saying Syria was Iran's "route to the sea." Iran has a large southern coastline with access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It has no land border with Syria.

___

ROMNEY: Said that when he was Massachusetts governor, high-school students who graduated in the top quarter "got a four-year, tuition-free ride at any Massachusetts public institution of higher learning."

OBAMA: "That happened before you came into office."

ROMNEY: "That was actually mine, actually, Mr. President. You got that fact wrong."

THE FACTS: Romney was right. The John and Abigail Adams scholarship program began in 2004 when he was governor.

___

ROMNEY: "In the 2000 debates, there was no mention of terrorism."

THE FACTS: There was passing mention of terrorism in the 2000 debates. In the Oct. 17, 2000, debate between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, Gore talked about his work in Congress to "deal with the problems of terrorism and these new weapons of mass destruction." And in the vice presidential debate, Democrat Joe Lieberman defended the Clinton administration's record of preparing the armed forces to "meet the threats of the new generation of tomorrow, of weapons of mass destruction, of ballistic missiles, terrorism, cyber warfare." Romney's larger point, that the U.S. did not anticipate anything on the scale of terrorist threat that existed, is supported by the light attention paid to the subject in the debates.

OBAMA: "What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East."

THE FACTS: Obama was suggesting that he had never favored keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the December 2011 withdrawal deadline that the Bush administration had negotiated with the Iraqi government. Actually, the Obama administration tried for many months to win Iraqi agreement to keeping several thousand American troops there beyond 2011 to continue training and advising the Iraqi armed forces. The talks broke down over a disagreement on legal immunity for U.S. troops.

Understanding Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has become so epidemic in this country that kids today risk having shorter life spans than their parents. The American Heart Association reports that about one in three American kids is overweight or obese. Those statistics have nearly tripled in about 50 years. As a result, many young children today are plagued with risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, raised insulin, physical inactivity, and obesity. Many also suffer from low self-esteem and depression. Is there a solution in sight?

First, we need to understand that there is not one magical formula to fix every single overweight child, since gaining weight can be environmental, emotional, physical, or inheritable. Simply put, every child is different and needs a unique plan of action to maintain a healthy weight. Ad campaigns, support from government officials, and even the enthusiasm from First Lady Michelle Obama are all notable, but dramatic change will take place at the grassroots level. Each individual child needs support, consistency, motivation, mentors, tough love, and education on a healthy lifestyle.

According to Sarah Armstrong, a childhood obesity expert at Duke University Medical Center, ?Solving childhood obesity is a directive that will require unprecedented levels of cooperation between multiple sectors? from schools and public health agencies to businesses and families. ?What is lacking currently is a universally-recognized understanding that childhood obesity is not the sole responsibility of the parent?or, worse yet, the child?to fix.?

Sometimes, just monitoring a child?s environment for a short period of time can be a helpful tool in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Keeping a journal for one week to record a child?s diet, physical activity, sedentary time, sleep patterns, and how they hydrate can help a parent decide if any changes are needed. ?The top cause of childhood obesity around the world is a shift to an ?obesogenic? environment,? says Kent Sasse, a bariatric surgeon based in Reno, Nevada. ?This means that our genes have not changed, the environment in which children are living today most certainly has.?

CSN: San Francisco Giants keep dispelling myths

BOX SCORE

The last time a team won three consecutive games twice in a year to win postseason series was 1985, when the Kansas City Royals were the best team in baseball.

That?s right. When the earth was still cooling.

But to those who believe in vibes, that?s all the throb in the San Francisco Giant clubhouse. Having punched holes in myths this entire postseason, they enter the all-in game with the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night with their best pitcher going, their bullpen rested, and their lineup healthy.

?I don?t know how else to put it,? Sergio Romo said, the words running over each other in a rush to escape his arrhythmic emotions. ?We don?t want to go home yet. I don?t want to go home yet.?

Well, the Giants ARE home, to be precise. Sunday?s 6-1 win over St. Louis in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series kept them from scattering to the nine vectors of offseason life, and anyway, home is what you make it.

Or in this case, what Ryan Vogelsong and Marco Scutaro and Pablo Sandoval and yes, Sergio Romo, chose to make it. The Giants, who allegedly struggled at home this year (and yes, allegedly is the word), gave the Cardinals all the home cooking a person can stomach. Between the atmosphere and the unique hops from an unusually choppy infield, the Cardinals got a week?s worth of San Francisco baseball in one night.

[BAGGARLY: Vogelsong helps Giants stay alive]

Romo is probably the spokesman for the rumble and hum of the Giants ascendant. If the Giants bullpen is closer by committee, he is the committee chair, and pulls the team and crowd with him. Indeed, he is one of the enduring myths of this season ? the closer who gets everything but the official title.

Then again, the starting rotation itself is a bit of a myth. It has been saved three times in October alone by the fourth and fifth starters, Ryan Vogelsong and the redoubtable Barry Zito, if you go by the pecking order established at the beginning of the year.

Vogelsong defied the reaper and his preseason place Sunday by overwhelming the Cardinals with fastballs early and baffling them with breaking balls the second time through the order. By the time he had allowed St. Louis? first hit, to David Descalso in the fifth inning, the Giants had already scored five of their six runs.

And there?s another myth dispelled. For all the focus on pitching matchups, postseason games are truly won by scoring first and establishing advantages that can be held. The team scoring first in San Francisco?s 11 games is 9-2, and the team scoring first has fallen behind only twice as well. The Giants won one of those two games, Game 3 in Cincinnati.

The first Vogelsong start.

Which, oddly, is the one of his three that impressed him the least.

?I actually think that my stuff was better in Game 2,? he said. ?I threw the ball extremely well tonight, obviously, but I feel like I had some good misses (that they swung through). It comes down to executing the pitches then getting lucky on the ones you don?t make, the ones they foul off or swing through. So I think Game 2, my stuff overall was better. Tonight I just had some good misses and some good fortune.?

[RELATED: Cardinals channel history]

And Scutaro, the other logical choice for series MVP if the Giants win, had another eye-popping game, walking and scoring the game?s first run, doubling home two runs in the second, and kicking in a third hit in the fourth just to reinforce the suggestion that he is part of the true nucleus of this team, after only three months in town. Remember, he was once a Colorado Rockie, a level of punishment that is hard to describe. Except, of course, by Scutaro himself.

?I wish I could see Dan O?Dowd, so I could kiss him right on the lips,? Scutaro said of the Colorado general manager who moved Scutaro west largely to save the Rockies a million dollars. ?He told me he was going to work to put me in the best place he could, where I had a chance to win. He kept his word.?

And Scutaro has kept his since his unfortunate 2011 in Boston. He is hitting .471 since Matt Holliday steamrolled him in the first inning of Game 2. People notice that sort of thing, especially in October, as in one step closer to overcoming his difficult end with the Red Sox.

?I remember the last out in Cincinnati, when (Jay) Bruce was fouling all those pitches off,? he said. ?I was saying, ?Please God, don?t make me feel like that again.??

Bruce flied out, Scott Rolen struck out, and Scutaro survives. So yes, some of it is timing. And some of it is luck. Good, and bad.

The Cardinals have injuries to Carlos Beltran (knee) and Holliday (back) that are impacting the St. Louis lineup, and catcher Yadier Molina has struggled in the five-spot. In addition, Game 6 starter Chris Carpenter was pitching the equivalent of his final spring training start after missing almost the entire year with an injury, and couldn?t find the feel of his sinker at any point of the game.

Plus, the Cardinals have allowed 10 unearned runs in this series, making them a team-wide version of Brooks Conrad, the unfortunate soul who committed four errors against the Giants in their NLDS win over the Braves two years ago.

All that, though, is filed under ?tough cheese.? In October, explanations become excuses, and excuses are the last thing to be packed on the plane. You win, or you lose. You live with the recriminations, or you live with the ambient noise of a city that envelops you.

And right now, San Francisco is all noise.

For all the credit Hunter Pence gets for his pregame speeches, and Bruce Bochy gets for his calm yet creative work at the rudder, bouncing out of the corner after losing the early rounds is as much a matter of vibe as anything else. And Romo carries that vibe to its overwhelming conclusion.

?I don?t know if there?s a knack to winning when your backs are against the wall,? Romo said, ?but I will say that doing it alone is impossible. You need everyone. In uniform, in the stands, all of it. We want to do well for ourselves, and this city. These people deserve our best efforts, and our best games.?

Well, one game, anyway, one which will tell just how much this city will get what Romo says it deserves. At home, where the Giants are not supposed to play well. With their best pitcher, Matt Cain, who will have to go very deep and very strong to beat the work of his two predecessors, Vogelsong and Zito.

And with Romo finishing, to the roaring strains of his own entry music, El Mechon.

The Lock.

Berdych downs Tsonga to capture Stockholm title | Tennis | Rock Hill ...

Tomas Berdych outlasted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's final at the Stockholm Open.

The second-seeded Berdych rallied past Tsonga, the No. 1 seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Berdych improved to 2-2 in finals this year, beating Gael Monfils to win the Montpellier title in February before losing in the Madrid final to Roger Federer in May and falling to John Isner in the final at Winston-Salem in August.

The Czech is now 8-8 for his career in title matches.

"It feels pretty good to have won a second title this season," Berdych said. "When I was 2-4 down in the second set, I remained positive and focused on my game. Against Jo you have to stay positive until the last point. I am happy that I was able to turnaround the match and that's what makes this title special."

Tsonga was trying to win his third title of 2012. He won in Doha to start the campaign in January and also captured the Metz crown in September.

Berdych is 3-1 lifetime against Tsonga.

With the victory, Berdych took home $113,795.

Childhood Pets Make Lasting Impact on Our Lives | Life With Cats

American Humane Association Survey ?People, Pets and the World We Share? Reveals Extraordinary Bond Between People And Their Pets

Grief of Losing Childhood Pets Carries Over into Adulthood, Affects Future Pet Ownership

A dramatic new survey released today by American Humane Association reveals the most compelling evidence to date of the vital and extraordinary bond between people and their pets, particularly between children and the animals they grew up with.? Indeed, four in 10 individuals say that the loss of a childhood pet from injury, disease or old age continues to affect them as adults. And, an even greater number of adults (44.4%) note that they are still affected by a pet who was given away, ran away or had an uncertain disposition.

These were the major findings of ?People, Pets and the World We Share,? a survey conducted by American Humane Association?s Animal Welfare Research Institute to examine the lasting impact a pet has on a child and the remarkable bond and loyalty they share.? Based on an email survey sent to its nationwide database of supporters and Facebook followers, respondents were asked to remember one animal from their childhood in answering the questions.

Dogs were by far the most popular childhood pet remembered, accounting for over 70 percent of responses.? Cats were second at 23.8%, with the remaining including a myriad of animals including horses, rabbits and hamsters.? 93.2% respondents were women, 44.8% were 30-49 years old, 43.2% over 50 with 12% under the age of 30.

?Experiences with a childhood pet remain throughout a person?s lifetime and showcase the transformative power of the human-animal bond and the amazing role that animals play in the lives of children,? says Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane Association.? ?Animals in our lives help to create the social network that is a cornerstone of creating humane communities. As the nation?s first humane organization, our unique dual mission is to improve the welfare, wellness and well-being of both children and animals. We are pleased to share the results of this survey as an important step for future work to assess and understand the world of people, pets and the inextricable link we share.?

Overcoming Grief Important Factor in Future Pet Ownership, Reducing Shelter Numbers

The survey backed the recent findings in a pet ownership study released earlier this year by American Humane Association and PetSmart Charities. ?In Phase One of the ?Keeping Pets (Dogs and Cats) in Homes Retention Study,? interviews with more than 1,000 previous pet owners revealed that lasting grief over the loss of a previous pet was a significant obstacle towards owning a new pet.?? Highlighting the emotional intricacies of the human-animal bond, one in five (20%) of previous dog owners and one in six (17%) of previous cat owners cited the loss of a beloved dog or cat as a reason they chose not to have another.? Helping people to overcome their reluctance to own another pet in adulthood is vital to decreasing the three to four million adoptable animals who are being euthanized in our nation?s shelters.

For many children, the passing of an animal might be their first experience dealing with the death of a member of their family.? Respondents were encouraged to provide comments about the animal they selected for the survey, and their emotional stories illustrate the lasting impact and irreplaceable bond they shared with their beloved pets.

Also illuminating is how parents of the respondents were remembered depending on the parents? involvement with the loss of a pet.? Some comments speak to a parent?s role in nurturing the human-animal bond, and a child?s ongoing feelings of fondness toward their parents as the result, while others express bitterness toward a parent that gave away a pet without their child?s knowledge.

A sampling of these comments follows:

??.I was only five when we had to euthanize [our pet] due to cancer.? My parents did note tell me until they brought him home to bury in our backyard.? I can still remember sitting there bawling.? That was 36 years ago.?

?? I was a lonely little girl, living with my father as my parents fought over my custody. This little dog was ALL I had?.. She was taken away from me, I never was told where to and I?ve never forgotten her? it was traumatic.?

?? ? I remember the details very clearly of his sudden illness, going to the vet, him being euthanized, and bringing him home to be buried?. I?ve always been thankful to my parents that the situation was handled with grace and dignity for our beloved Barney??

??To me, losing a pet is no different that losing a relative or friend.? They become a part of your family, and although they can?t communicate in forms of human language, the love and the bond that is created cannot be denied.? I?ve had to deal with the loss of two pets in my life and just like the death of a loved one, I grieved and still think about the time we had [together] often?.?

??Caring for a pet showed me the power of compassion and unconditional love??

?? Fuzzy was my best friend, my confidant and kid all rolled into one.? She helped me grow up and never feel alone?. I love and miss her greatly to this day??

?? My dog Stormy was there when I was brought home from the hospital and was by my side from that day on.? He was my best friend, my protector, my playmate and my confidant.? He died when I was 11 and my memories of him have never, and will never, die?.?

??my dog disappeared and I spent months searching for him.? I still have his picture to this day and am still haunted [by his loss] He was devoted to me and me to him??

?I know it might sound strange but I find it harder to see an animal pass away than a human.?

??Domino wasn?t just a pet, he was my best friend and every time I was sick, he stayed with me?if I had a [epileptic] seizure he stayed with me and then follow me around the house to be sure I was safe.? He meant the world to me and nobody could ever replace him or what he meant to me.? He was my rock for 18 years and I was his and I will never forget him.???

??having a pet as a child and being given the responsibility of caring for a creature that was dependent on its humans left me with a lifelong love of all animals and sympathy for those that have been neglected or abused??

FTC enlists consumers to help stop robocalls

Don't like those annoying automated telemarketing calls?

Well, now's your chance to do something about it.

The Federal Trade Commission is looking for tech-savvy individuals to come up with a product to thwart so-called "robocalls" from harassing helpless citizens.

In fact, the FTC, which oversees the Federal Do Not Call list (which has a whopping 217 million people on it), is so frustrated that it's offering a $50,000 prize for the best technical solution to stop those unwanted calls.

Between October 2011 and September 2012, the FTC received 2,260,021 robocall-related complaints, said spokesperson Cheryl Hackley.

"We're trying to tap into the technological expertise and innovation that's out there of the American public," said Kari Daffan, a staff attorney with the FTC, adding that there's "nothing that currently exists in the marketplace."

Robocalls typically originate overseas and are illegal under the 2009 Telemarketing Sales Rule, which stipulates that a consumer must give written permission to receive a call from that entity.

"That doesn't happen too much, if ever," said Daffan. "The vast majority of these calls are just scam artists. They're just making a buck, and they often do it off of the most vulnerable consumers, like the elderly or those who do have debt."

Not only will solvers get a cash prize, but they can also retain intellectual property rights to their idea. Companies with more than 10 employees are able to compete for the FTC's Commission Technology Achievement Award. (No cash prize, alas). The agency, in turn, will have the right to feature the solution's name, text description and images on its website.

The " FTC Robocall Challenge" opens to the public on Oct. 25 and closes Jan. 17, 2013. The winner will be announced in April.

No-Fail Slow Cooker Pot Roast - Southington, CT Patch

Crockpots or slow-cookers are great to use for many dishes, however, some such as meat dishes need a little extra prep work to get it right.

I have made this pot roast recipe many times and have tried to perfect it so the meat as well as the veggies come out tender all at the same time. Six hours on "high" for my crockpot seems to do the trick.

This recipe takes a little advance work and always makes a mess of my cook-top, but the end result of tasty, tender pot roast the whole family will enjoy is worth the clean up.

Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories like this delivered right to your inbox or smartphone every day with our free newsletter. Simple, fast sign-up here.

Slow-Cooker Pot Roast
Depending upon size of roast, serves 5-8

2-3 cups baby carrots (not sliced)
3-4 ribs of celery, cut into 1 inch pieces
One 3 to 5 pound pot roast (I used a 3 lb. boneless chuck roast)
salt and pepper
flour for dusting
1 T of vegetable oil
1 T butter
1 large onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
8 oz. package fresh mushrooms, sliced thick
1 T flour
1 T tomato paste or ketchup
2 1/2 cups chicken, beef or vegetable broth

Directions:

Place baby carrots and celery slices in the slow cooker.

Season roast with salt and pepper and lightly coat with flour. In a large stainless steel frying pan, heat vegetable oil until hot. (Try not to use a non-stick pan as you want a good browning on the roast).

Brown the roast on all sides until evenly browned. Place browned roast on top of carrots and celery in slow cooker.

In same frying pan, melt the butter and add the onions, sauteing for several minutes. Add the garlic and cook briefly, but don't let it brown. Add mushrooms, flour, tomato paste or ketchup, and broth and cook, stirring up any browned bits left from the roast. Stir well for a few minutes then carefully pour this mixture on top of the roast in the slow cooker.

Cover, and cook on high for 6 hours. After about 3 hours, you can turn the roast over if you desire (and are at home to do so) but it's not necessary.

When 6 hours is over, remove the roast and place on a rimmed cutting board. With the cover off the slow cooker, keep the temperature on high and stir the sauce, letting it thicken slightly. If desired, stir together one teaspoon each of butter and flour and add to sauce if it needs thickening.

To serve, slice pot roast into chucks and place on top of mashed potatoes or cooked egg noodles with the vegetables and gravy.

In an Oct. 17 "Slatest" post, Josh Voorhees misstated the percentage of respondents in a CNN survey who scored the town hall debate for Mitt Romney. Thirty-nine percent said the GOP challenger gave the stronger performance, not 36 percent.

An Oct. 15 "Culturebox," by Holly Allen, David Haglund, Katie Kilkenny, Chris Kirk, and Forrest Wickman, misspelled the surname of fictional president Josiah Bartlet.

In an Oct. 15 "Explainer," Brian Palmer wrote that the red panda is the giant panda's closest living relative. They are not directly related.

In an Oct. 15 ?Hive,? S.T. VanAirsdale incorrectly identified Jason Scott as a backer of the Open Locksport Kickstarter. He also stated that Schuyler Towne edited his own Wikipedia entry; Towne says that friends edited it but he did not.

In an Oct. 15 ?Politics,? David Weigel misspelled the name of the town of Tomah, Wis.

In an Oct. 15 ?XX Factor? blog post, Amanda Hess misattributed two quotes to Christopher Bailey. It was Jason Fetner who said, ?Until the laws in this country catch up to technology, we?re going to continue to see these types of problems.? Fetner also said that police will continue to rely on members of Internet forums ?looking out? for offenders.

Progress (A Medieval Fantasy with a hint of Steampunk)

There was an awful lot that could be said for the march of progress. It was something that many of the esoteric researchers were only too quick to point out when people began to get sentimental.

Since the reign of the empress had begun, the blanket of fear and superstition that had once covered Valon had been gradually lifted away, into a new and enlightened age of understanding.

They could understand how magic worked. They could enhance and control it, focus it and use it as power. The force that had once seen the species of Valon cowed and terrified had become a means for them to better their lives.

Through one of the high, vaulted glass windows it was possible to see out into the blue evening, where the eerie glimmer of the magelights that lined the streets of the capital swayed in the wind. Winter was beginning to draw in, though to the inhabitants of the city, such a thing held little fear. The enchanted gardens allowed food to be grown all year round.

A few inhabitants heading home from work, or out to search for a meal or amusement, trod along the cobbles, attempting to keep out of the path of the golems. The hulking, metallic figures in question plodded through the streets with brooms and cleaning cloths, the magelights glinting off their bronze shells and immobile masks. Children often shied away from the constructs, though few of the adult inhabitants of Valon batted an eyelid any longer to their presence. They had become a fixture, yet another great gift provided by the new governance.

It couldn't be blamed on them, it was natural enough to wish for comfort over hardship, and under the influence of those who dwelled up in the palace, the people never seemed to face any sort of difficulty....to the point that they neglected to ask very important questions.

The insides of the palace were probably not what most would imagine...well..below the ground floor at any rate. A great deal of effort had been taken into preserving the old features above, though the installation of esoteric power had proved a challenge, and meant that the old dungeons and storage rooms had had to be drastically remodelled.

The chamber could not have been more than one floor below the ground, if the small windows were anything to go by. It had been built to minimize sound, though it appeared they did not feel that they had much to hide regarding the power source...even if it were somewhat...distasteful to individuals.

A few magelights burned overhead in the large domed room, the copper-plated door left somewhat ajar.

At the front, a haphazardly dressed figure paced back and forth, wringing their hands.

The individual appeared to be a woman in her late twenties, rather unimpressive in stature, bearing the look of someone who had far too much on their mind. Her dark blonde hair was tied back rather messily, and seemed somewhere in need of a wash, reflecting the lights in a rather unappealing manner. She looked a little on the pale side, eyes deep-set and cheek bones rather high. It was possible there was some elf in the family, but it was clearly quite a way back.

She was dressed in a collection of ill-matching, and admittedly rather cheap clothes, her outfit seeming to have been assembled by committee, and more than enough to demonstrate that she couldn't have been there as a guest of the empress or any of the council members that dwelt within the building.

No, Maeve was there as a matter of...what was it...obligation? Guilt? Some manner of foolish optimism that her presence might be of help? No...it wasn't exactly any of them...it was more that it was the only thing she could do. The order was gone. The schools of magic were scattered, and the mythical creatures were and hidden in fear of falling prey to the Esoterics. She was pretty certain there was not likely to be some great uprising. So this was, in some way, Maeve's only way of showing the people what she was, or what she had once been at any rate...regardless of how painful it was.

The sharp-featured woman turned and walked toward the centre, feeling her stomach twisting into knots at the sight of the shape, forlornly suspended from the centre of the dome by several cables and ropes. It was an enormous shape, four legs and a pair of once imposing wings that lay in tatters, hanging limply at its
sides. The beast's head rested on the tiled floor, criss-crossed with cuts and with the jaw locked shut. There appeared to had once been horns, but they had been roughly sawn off.

Set around the creature's ribs a metallic claw issued upwards, gripping its chest, some sort of red, vicious glow leaking through the gaps as it seemed to be...taking something.

This, this...travesty was the fate of the dragon Rah'von. His life force had powered the lights of the palace for approaching three years, and Maeve, once a rider of considerable renown, found herself nothing but an inconsequential figure in it all.

Where were the others? Other dragon riders? She didn't know. Maybe they'd suffered the same fate. The bond had weakened over the years, but it still didn't allow her much further than the city gates. They could all be gone for what she knew, or the news of the terrible fate that might await those of great magical power might have scared them away.

The woman dropped to her knees beside the head of the once great creature and ran a hand over the dull scales. There was no reverence for them anymore. They were simply cogs in the machine of progress.

Valon, a land where the future has arrived, and power has been reversed. Where humanfolk once feared magic and monsters which were a constant threat, the advent of Esoteric Technology has allowed them to turn the wild, untamed force into something that benefits thier everyday lives, affording them light, heat, transport, and devices which save them labour. For the majority, life within the Empire of Valon has never been better...

...but for some it has come at a terrible cost. Magic is now a commodity. Something to be controlled, to be bought at sold. Those of magical talent are expected to serve the Empress or face imprisonment, beasts of magic have been driven back onto reserves in the far corners, or shut away as dangerous animals, and the advent of Magefire, the new powersource, has led to increasingly disturbing activities in order to draw power, including the use of the dragon Rah'von to power the palace.

Some wish to destroy the establishment that condoned such things, but that would return the world to the times of fear and darkness. Good and evil have ceased to have the meaning that they once did. The fight is no longer between good and bad. It is instead a battle between preservation and progress.

Hi there folks, I'm Vit and this is my plot so far. It's in its early stages at the moment and I've done my best to try and leave things open ended as far as roles go, let people think up their own ideas. A resident of the capital? A clever Esoteric Technologist? One of the apparent lost dragon riders? A magical being with a grudge? Perhaps even the young empress? All sorts would be welcome. Please do post if you think you might be interested.
