Human-powered copter breaks record with 50-sec flight

4 hrs.

A team at the University of Maryland has blown away a long-standing (or long-hovering) record for human-powered flight. A Japanese team stayed aloft for 19 seconds in 1994, and no one has been able to do better until Thursday, when the Maryland team stayed aloft for 50 seconds. They fell just?short, however, of the 60 seconds required to qualify for a decades-old $250,000?prize.

Gamera II is the name of the helicopter the team constructed in order to claim the Sikorsky prize, created in 1980 in memory of the helicopter?pioneer Igor Sikorsky.?The contest requires that the craft reach 3 meters of altitude ? and that it stays there for a full minute.?

The newest version of the craft weighs only 71 pounds, 30 less than the previous one, which?stayed aloft for 11 seconds in 2011. Gamera II?harvests power from arm movements as well as pedals, transmitting more power to the four large rotors. These and other improvements allowed the team to break the 18-year-old record and post a time of 50 seconds in the air at 2 feet up. Watch the video of that flight below:

The team will continue to make attempts at the 60-second goal, though they would still need to go significantly higher to claim the prize money, even if they hit the minute mark. The solution is not as easy as simply pedaling harder. Gamera II takes advantage of an aerodynamic characteristic of low-altitude craft called ground effect, which reduces the energy needed to hover, and that advantage decreases the higher the craft goes.

The researchers from Maryland are not the only ones working on the problem: A private team called Atlas recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise some funding for their attempt on the Sikorsky prize. The requirements of the prize may be straightforward, but they are also extremely difficult, so chances are it will take some time and effort, not to mention money and materials, to make it happen.

Researcher finds timing of ADHD medication affect academic progress

Monday, June 25, 2012

A team of researchers led by an epidemiologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and University of Iceland has found a correlation between the age at which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) begin taking medication, and how well they perform on standardized tests, particularly in math.

The study, titled, "A Population-Based Study of Stimulant Drug Treatment of ADHD and Academic Progress in Children," appears in the July, 2012, edition of Pediatrics, and can be viewed online on June 25. Using data from the Icelandic Medicines Registry and the Database of National Scholastic Examinations, the researchers studied 11,872 Icelandic children born between 1994 and 1996. The children started medication for ADHD at different times between fourth and seventh grades.

The findings showed that children who began drug treatment within 12 months of their fourth-grade test declined 0.3 percent in math by the time they took their seventh-grade test, compared with a decline of 9.4 percent in children who began taking medication 25-to-36 months after their fourth-grade test.

The data also showed that girls benefited only in mathematics, whereas boys had marginal benefits in math and language arts.

"Children who began taking medications immediately after their fourth-grade standardized tests showed the smallest declines in academic performance," said the study's lead author Helga Zoega, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellow of Epidemiology at Mount Sinai's Institute for Translational Epidemiology. "The effect was greater in girls than boys and also greater for children who did poorly on their fourth grade test."

Stimulants are widely used in the United States as a therapeutic option for children with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity associated with ADHD. The medications are less frequently used in Europe, although their use in Iceland most closely resembles the U.S. Long-term follow-up studies of stimulant use and academic performance are scarce, according to the researchers.

Google honors Alan Turing with doodle

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 23 (UPI) -- Google honored the 100th anniversary of British mathematician Alan Turing's birth Saturday with a Turing Machine doodle on its home page.

The Turing Machine, a theoretical computer, never actually existed. But Turing argued a computing machine with the power to read symbols on an infinitely long tape and to manipulate them and add its own would, in effect, be thinking.

Google's Turing Machine doodle asks computer users to change a binary number into the company name, PC World reported.

Turing led the British team that cracked the German Enigma code during World War II. He took his own life in 1954, two years after his arrest for homosexuality, supposedly eating a cyanide-coated apple, a method copied from the Walt Disney movie "Snow White."

Turing's test for thinking was whether a machine conversing with a human by computer could convince someone it was also human. Robert Epstein, a psychologist and former editor in chief of Psychology Today, reported that in 2006 he carried on a four-month flirtation online with a Russian woman named Ivana before he figured out she was actually a bot, a software program designed to deceive people on matchmaking Web sites, The Christian Science Monitor reported.

Former Penn State coach Sandusky guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse

of 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse, believing the graphic testimony of young men over a defense team that portrayed the former

assistant football coach as a caring man devoted to mentoring disadvantaged children.

As the jury foreman read the verdict around 10 p.m., Sandusky stood calmly between his defense attorneys. His wife, Dottie, sitting in the front row of the courtroom with five friends and family members, pursed her lips and shook her head, casting her eyes at the floor.

Moments later, a loud roar could be heard in the courtroom when word of the verdict spread to people gathered outside the historic building?s main entrance. A Sandusky lawyer vowed to appeal.

?Jerry Sandusky is not going to get away with this anymore,? said Justine Andronici, attorney for Victims 3 and 7. She said she messaged her clients: ?You were believed.?

Tom Kline, a lawyer representing Victim 5, said: ?There?s no winners. There?s justice. Mr. Sandusky got what he deserved.?

The jury of seven women and five men, most with Penn State ties, deliberated about 21 hours over two days. None would speak with reporters after the verdict.

The family of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno issued a statement:

?Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today?s verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families.?

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, speaking from the courthouse steps, called Sandusky a ?serial child predator ? who has been held accountable for his crimes.?

Kelly said the investigation is ongoing and didn?t specify whether additional charges will be filed.

She thanked the men who testified against Sandusky, calling their involvement crucial to the case. Kelly also encouraged other victims of sexual abuse to come forward.

Some in the crowd said Sandusky deserves nothing less than life behind bars.

?Honestly, I think it should be a death sentence,? William Nash of Bellefonte said.

Prosecutor Joseph E. McGettigan III asked Judge John M. Cleland to revoke Sandusky?s bail. The judge granted the request over defense attorney Joe Amendola?s objection. Sandusky, 68, had been confined to his home under $250,000 bail since December.

Sandusky was sent to the Centre County Prison and walked out accompanied by sheriff?s deputies. He was escorted with his hands cuffed in front of him to a vehicle and driven away.

?From the beginning, we knew what we were facing, so the surprise would have been the opposite,? Amendola told reporters in the courtroom moments after the verdict.

Sandusky made no sound as the verdict was delivered.

?I think Jerry was prepared for this,? Amendola said.

Amendola said he planned for Sandusky to take the stand in his own defense until he learned that Sandusky?s 33-year-old adopted son Matt would then testify against his client.

?That changed the whole complexion of our case,? Amendola said, ?because Jerry always intended to testify.?

Amendola noted Matt Sandusky testified before the grand jury that recommended charging Sandusky and said his father never touched him.

?He was here with his family on the first day of trial, according to his family members, scoffing at the accusers? testimony,? Amendola said.

Of Sandusky?s claims of innocence, Amendola said, ?Jerry believes his story. I believe he believes his story. Where the truth lies, that?s why we have trials.?

The jury acquitted Sandusky of one count of raping a person under the age of 16 ? Victim 2, an unidentified boy former Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary testified he saw Sandusky with in a locker room shower.

They also acquitted on counts of indecent assault related to Victims 5 and 6. Victim 6 was a boy whose mother sparked an investigation in 1998 when she discovered Sandusky showered with the boy. In those cases, the jury found no evidence of sex acts or touching.

Sandusky helped bring national prominence to a football program run by the legendary Paterno. He will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for abusing boys over a 15-year period starting in 1994. He will be sentenced within several months.

He retired in 1999 from his position as defensive coordinator for Penn State, where he coached for more than three decades and helped earn the school a national reputation as ?Linebacker U.?

The charges had a devastating impact on the university, with two former executives facing perjury charges for allegedly lying to the state grand jury that heard evidence against Sandusky.

Paterno was fired and university President Graham Spanier forced out for their handling of a 2001 sex-abuse allegation against Sandusky, and the university has acknowledged that its employees have received subpoenas from federal prosecutors.

Penn State said in a statement Friday night that it plans to invite Sandusky?s victims to a private program to address their concerns and compensate them for claims related to the school.

Known nationally for his coaching and winning record under Paterno, Sandusky was also a local celebrity described in trial testimony as a saint for his work with at-risk children through The Second Mile, a charity he founded in 1977 and based in Centre County.

Sandusky and his wife adopted six children and were foster parents to several more, so allegations that Sandusky had taken advantage of the troubled boys about whom he professed to care deeply devastated the idyllic community where Penn State has its main campus.

Over seven days in Centre County Court, prosecutors presented testimony from eight young men and other witnesses who described Sandusky touching, groping, bear-hugging and forcing oral and anal sex on the boys.

The abuse, witnesses said, happened in a basement bedroom at Sandusky?s home near State College, in locker room showers on the Penn State campus, in hotels and on road trips with the Penn State football team.

The men, ranging in age from 18 to 28, testified they suffered in silence, some for more than a decade, because they were ashamed, scared and initially feared losing the father figure they found through their friendship with Sandusky.

One 25-year-old man, identified in court papers as Victim 3, said he felt abandoned by Sandusky when he was sent to live in a group home.

?I prayed that he would call me, find a way to get me out of there, adopt me or something,? the man said.

Each of the eight accusers who testified in court gave his name, but The Morning Call does not identify victims of sexual abuse.

In his closing argument, lead prosecutor McGettigan told jurors he felt he had pieces of the 10 boys? souls in his pocket, and asked jurors to acknowledge their loss.

?Give him the justice he really deserves. Find him guilty of everything,? McGettigan said.

Sandusky?s defense attorneys, Amendola and Karl Rominger, worked to create the impression that his accusers are motivated by the potential to tap Penn State?s coffers through lawsuits and asked in cross-examinations why the men had hired civil lawyers, noting some made more serious allegations after they did.

?If he did this, he should rot in jail,? Amendola said. ?But what if he didn?t do these things? His life is destroyed.?

The defense team also cast doubt on the integrity of the state police investigation that led to charges against Sandusky.

In a move that appeared to catch prosecutors off guard, defense attorneys confronted a pair of state troopers who led the investigation with a recording in which one was heard to share details of other accusers? statements with the 28-year-old man known as Victim 4.

Sandusky?s lawyers put a family friend of McQueary on the witness stand to cast doubt on McQueary?s report about the night in 2001 he saw Sandusky in a locker room shower with a 10- to 12-year-old boy.

In two hours of testimony early in the trial, McQueary said he saw Sandusky with his genitals pressed against the boy?s rear end and had no doubt what he witnessed was sexual.

But Dr. Jonathan Dranov, summoned for advice after McQueary reported the scene to his father, said McQueary never mentioned a specific sexual act.

Dottie Sandusky also testified in his defense, telling jurors she never saw anything inappropriate between her husband and the boys who became like family in the years after Sandusky founded The Second Mile.

She said she remembered fondly most of the boys who testified against her husband and rebutted points of their testimony. Notably, she told the jury that her home?s basement, where some of the abuse was alleged to have taken place, is not soundproof.

Armstrong: USADA investigators violating rules

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong filed a scathing response Friday to the latest doping allegations against him, accusing the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency of violating its own rules and possibly breaking federal law during its investigation.

The agency said Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs and other improper methods to win cycling's premiere event, the Tour de France, from 1999-2005. Friday was the deadline for Armstrong to respond to USADA's warning that charges were pending before his case moves to the next stage.

Armstrong, who denies doping and notes he has never failed a drug test, could be stripped of his titles and banned from cycling, though he retired from the sport last year.

In their 11-page document, Armstrong's attorneys complained they still haven't been allowed to see the evidence against him, including witness names and any expert analysis to support USADA's claim that 2009 and 2010 blood tests are "fully consistent" with blood doping.

The letter said USADA's case is "long on stale allegations disproved long ago and short on evidence" and "offensive to any notions of due process."

Armstrong's case now goes to a three-person USADA review board, which will decide if there is enough evidence to support the charges. If USADA files formal charges, the case could go to a three-person arbitration panel by November.

"The Review Board must recommend that this case not move forward," the letter said.

Armstrong's attorneys made similar claims in previous letters, but Friday's document appeared to lay out his potential legal strategy should he file a federal lawsuit against USADA.

Armstrong's letter argues that USADA's rules allow the review board to consider materials submitted from an accused athlete, but complains that he can't mount a legitimate defense until he's able to see the evidence against him. USADA has said it is withholding witness identities to protect them from intimidation.

If the case moves to an arbitration hearing, Armstrong will be allowed to review the evidence in advance and will be allowed to cross-examine witnesses.

Travis Tygart, USADA's chief executive officer, said in a statement that the rules "provide full due process and are designed to get to the truth."

USADA's warning letter to Armstrong said 10 former teammates are willing to testify that they either know he used performance-enhancing drugs or talked about using them and encouraged them within the team. USADA says Armstrong used the blood-booster EPO, steroids and improper blood transfusions.

Armstrong's attorneys say they believe USADA investigators coerced false testimony from witnesses by promising not to charge them with doping; they argue this could violate bribery laws.

They also question whether USADA improperly gained access to testimony in a recent federal grand jury criminal investigation that ended in February with no charges filed against Armstrong.

The letter notes that Tygart participated in witness interviews with federal criminal investigators.

Armstrong's letter also challenged the 2009-2010 blood tests, which were taken during his two-year comeback from retirement. Armstrong passed all his drug tests during that period and posted his testing results on his website, Livestrong.com, and no charges were brought, the letter said.

It also said most of the allegations fall outside of USADA's eight-year statute of limitations but the agency argues that Armstrong keeps expanding the time limit by continuing to deny drug use.

USADA has said it is also pursuing doping charges against Johan Bruyneel, the manager of Armstrong's winning Tour de France teams; team doctors Pedro Celaya and Luis Garcia del Moral; team trainer Pepe Marti, and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari.

Bruyneel, who now leads the RadioShack-Nissan-Trek team, said Friday he won't attend this year's Tour de France because the allegations would be a distraction for his team and the race. Bruyneel says he is innocent.

Romney says he'll do 'opposite' on Israel

(AP) ? Standing in front of his campaign tour bus, Mitt Romney on Saturday told religious conservatives he would do "the opposite" of what President Barack Obama has done on Israel.

Romney spent most of the day appealing to voters in Pennsylvania, a battleground state he said he would win in the fall, although Democrats succeeded in pushing his bus tour through the state off of its original itinerary.

"I am going to win Pennsylvania," Romney told a cheering crowd in Cornwall, a small town in the center of the state, as his campaign bus rolled through on the second day of a five-day, six-state tour.

Romney took some time out of his tour to address religious conservatives at the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington via video uplink, telling the crowd he believes the president is more concerned about Israel attacking Iran than he is about Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon. His hawkish speech was the first time he's discussed policy toward Israel at length since becoming the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"I think, by and large, you can just look at the things the president has done and do the opposite," Romney said when asked about Israel. He spoke to the gathering of religious conservatives from Weatherly, Pa., via video uplink with his campaign bus in the background.

Of Iran, Romney said: "He's almost sounded like he's more frightened that Israel might take military action than he's concerned that Iran might become nuclear."

Democrats accused Romney of distorting Obama's record on Israel. Spokesman Ben LaBolt said Obama has given Israel more security assistance than any other administration and has stood with Israel at the United Nations.

After his address, Romney's bus continued on to Quakertown, where Democratic protests forced him to take a detour. Romney rerouted his tour after former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and several other Democratic officials held a press conference outside the Wawa gas station where the former Massachusetts governor had planned an early afternoon stop. Protestors gathered outside the store.

So Romney decided to visit a different Wawa store instead.

"Why we're at this Wawa, instead of the other Wawa?" Romney said as he paid for a meatball hoagie. "I understand I had a surrogate over there already, so we decided to pick a different place. My surrogate is former Gov. Rendell, who said we could win Pennsylvania."

Instead of making prepared remarks to the crowd gathered outside the first location - Romney's advance team had set up a microphone - the Republican's bus went instead to the second Quakertown Wawa and made a quick tour through the store.

The detour threw Romney off the jobs-and-economy message he had been pushing earlier in the day.

"I think we have to have a very careful review of who's giving a fair shot to the American people," Romney told a crowd of several hundred packed into a warehouse at Weatherly Casting and Machine Co., next to the train tracks that run through Weatherly, Pa., about 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

That stop was the first of three appearances in small towns in this state with 20 electoral votes that Obama won in 2008 with 54 percent. No Republican presidential nominee has carried the state since 1988.

Romney appeared with former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a possible running mate, who told the Weatherly crowd, "Mitt Romney's message is: It will be better."

The tour is intended to challenge Obama in states where he's strong. Romney is targeting smaller cities and towns through the state's more conservative midsection. Weatherly is in Carbon County, which Obama narrowly carried in 2008.

Romney also stopped Quakertown, in Bucks County, as well as at Cornwall Iron Furnace, a national historic landmark. That's in Lebanon County, which GOP nominee John McCain won in 2008.

Romney also took time to do an interview for CBS News' "Face the Nation" program. Sunday will mark the first time he has appeared on a weekend political talk show since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee.

Romney told host Bob Schieffer that the president's decision to allow some young illegal immigrants to stay in the country instead of deporting them was a largely political move.

"If (Obama) really wanted to make a solution that dealt with these kids or illegal immigration in America, than this is something he would have taken up in his first three and a half years, not in his last few months," Romney said.

Romney is on a bus tour, but he planned to fly each night to the next state and ride from town to town during the day. It's his first traditional campaign swing since the primary and is aimed at undecided voters in six pivotal states won by Obama four years ago: New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa.

The tour represents a new mode for Romney in the general election. During the primary, Romney sometimes ran into trouble in less-scripted environments, and the bus tour probably will test him again. He also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with average people.

His efforts to connect were clearly on display Saturday, when he was careful to learn the Pennsylvania word for submarine sandwiches - hoagies - and noted the intra-state rivalry between Wawa, which is popular in eastern Pennsylvania, and Sheetz, another convenience store that's the favorite in the western part of the state.

"By the way, where do you get your hoagies here?" Romney asked the crowd in Cornwall. "Do you get them at Wawa's, is that where you get them? No? Do you get them at Sheetz?"

Unfortunately, Romney chose the town closest to the state's geographic center - Cornwall is near Harrisburg - and the crowd was split.

"Well, I went to a place today called Wawa's, you ever been to Wawa's, anyone's ever been?" he continued.

And then: "I'm sorry, I know there's a very big state divide."
